About Carole

I have a B.S. in Education: grades 1 - 9 and a Remedial Reading certification. I taught all the grades at one time or another in every subject but mostly English, Reading, Spelling and Science for 20 years including 8 years in the Title I Federal Reading Program. I also have a Tutoring Certificate and taught for the Literacy Program in Louisiana where I tutored adults in learning to read. In addition, I have a lot of experience in private tutoring of students in grades 1-10 in just about every subject. My hobbies include writing poetry and I have been published several times and I also enjoy painting and other forms of art.

About the lesson

When I tutor in person I usually give my student(s) a series of diagnostic tests to determine their real grade level and their learning style(s) as well as a verbal I.Q. test and a personal interest inventory. I enjoy getting to know my students and consider their likes, dislikes and needs to be very important. I usually begin a lesson with a short review of the previous lesson and then start the new lesson. I then introduce the new lesson and try to peak the student's interest in it and let them know of the importance of learning it without putting any undue pressure on them. I have a friendly and yet professional style and whatever subject I am teaching I usually introduce the new vocabulary within that lesson first. Then we read and discuss and questions are encouraged. After the lesson is over, I like to give the student(s) some questions to answer or some other form of practice which I immediately check. Then we summarize what was learned that day and I may or may not assign some homework. If homework is assigned it is also checked together immediately the next time we meet and a review of the vocabulary is done before the new lesson begins. I also like to use visual aides during a lesson and sometimes (depending on the age(s) of the child/children) I use some hand puppets and various other things to make the lesson more fun and/or interesting. I believe these things make learning more enjoyable and they also make teaching more enjoyable which I think is important in order to establish a good rapport with the students and make them look forward to our lessons. Also, I always try to keep their level of learning ability in mind as I strongly believe "success breeds success".

Details

Students must be signed up for no less than two lessons/week. Also, all payments are to be made on a weekly basis before any lessons begin. If a student is to be absent and the parent or student calls or messages me ahead of time the money for that lesson will carry over to the next week. If no call to cancel the lesson is made there will be no carry-over and the money is not refunded.
