About Fiona

I have been a Primary School Teacher and Deputy Head, in both maintained and independent sectors for 28 years. With a sound understanding of the most up to date teaching trends, curriculum and assessments, I work professionally and knowledgeably, bringing out the best in children of all ages and abilities. I can prepare children for Key Stage 1 and 2 SATS, 11+ entrance examination as well as supporting those who need that 'extra boost' to help them improve their learning skills with a 'bespoke' learning package. I have a wide range of resources designed to help your child improve and gain confidence in their abilities and I use varied teaching techniques - practical activities, formal practice, problem solving and investigations as well as playing games, which all children love, designed to motivate them and to help them develop good learning habits. I am experienced teaching English to non-English speakers and deliver twice-weekly lessons to small classes of foreign students online. I also deliver 'home-school' programmes to children in their own home (Cheshire). More recently, I have been using my classroom teaching skills to deliver EFL. I am a highly articulate English speaker and I focus upon accurate pronunciation. My EFL classes are highly successful and I currently teach English to a child in Dubai as well as to small groups based in Romania, Pakistan and South East Asia. The children love these lessons which are always hands-on. I believe that my committed and enthusiastic teaching style enables all my students to work to their full potential; this then has a positive effect in all other areas of their education.

About the lesson

I deliver bespoke lessons, tailored to the individual needs of the child. I encourage liaison directly with the pupil's school teachers to ensure that I teach the same methods and areas of curriculum which need development. Although I reinforce and teach my students principles and the basics of maths and English, I encourage independent thinking, enabling a student to think around a problem, look for clues and gain confidence in answering questions for themselves. When undertaking English activities (reading, writing, comprehension), I guide students to develop their own general knowledge and thus they are able to make judgements and choices within a securely understood context. My maths lessons are fun and can include number games as well as exercises - and always positive; my students always feel as though they have achieved well, even if only small steps have been made. I develop excellent relationships with my students and have 'a bit of a giggle' - laughter and fun are key to learning!
