About Benjamin
Hello! My name is Ben, and I'm an empathetic peer tutor who is eager to help you achieve your goals! I am a 3rd year student at Tufts University pursuing a degree in Child Studies & Human Development and Clinical Psychology (and when I'm not studying, I also play Spikeball competitively as well as perform with a bucket drumming group!). As an active student with years spent in front of tutors 1-on-1 and professors in lecture halls, I know firsthand just how helpful academic support can be - especially from someone who understands where you're really coming from.
To that end, I will ensure that your goals are heard, your needs are met, and you are provided with every opportunity I can provide to learn, grow, and achieve success. That promise is backed by a comprehensive education in developmental psychology - literally the science of how we learn and grow - and so while I have no formal certifications, my education and years of peer tutor experience in high school and college provide me with a deep foundation of knowledge and expertise from which to offer assistance that is truly valuable and meaningful.

When meeting with any student, I make it a priority to understand more than just what content they might be struggling with. Instead, I employ a holistic strength-based approach where I learn how a student learns best, what strategies have been successful or less so, and most importantly, how this pre-existing foundation can be intuitively leveraged to make meaningful progress in both the subject at hand and as a student overall.
Once getting to know the student, a typical lesson will make effective use of scaffolding to guide them to a new level of understanding in the chosen content area:
- Exercises with clear guidance and active support
- Explaining content with a conversation; clarifying key concepts and ingraining understanding
- Unguided exercises with support only as requested to build strength in application
- Further guidance as needed (i.e progression with new topics, acute support with specific assignments, etc.)
What sets me apart?
As a student myself, I remain vividly aware of the struggles that come with trying to learn new material, and especially of the frustration that can accompany not getting the results you hope for with traditional schooling on its own. With this in mind, I make special use of my training in psychology to be an active listener and a warm, supportive mentor to my students - building a valuable rapport that will often help more than any workbook or study guide.
