About Marian
I have about seven years of experience teaching early skills in reading, spelling, writing, grammar, and handwriting to students who struggle to make sense of written English. Most of my students are of age 5-10 or in grade K-5.
I am certified in the Orton-Gillingham approach (as a CALP), which was developed for dyslexia but is also effective for many other students, and I also use Science of Reading and Structured Word Inquiry approaches.

We use multisensory techniques right from the start, for phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondence. We focus on handwriting, phonics, fluency, prefixes and suffixes, vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar. We explore the reasons for unusual “sight word” spellings and the influences of other languages, especially Old English, Latin, French, and Greek. I customize materials for each lesson according to the age and needs of each student.
The lesson moves at your child’s own pace and consists of face-to-face interaction, along with carefully-designed materials annotated in real time. Your child learns each concept or spelling pattern within a logical sequence, and practices it by speaking, reading, and writing it in words, phrases, and sentences.
At the end of each week, I email you a progress report listing the concepts and skills we worked on during the week. If you have questions or concerns, or want suggestions for helping your child outside of lessons, I’d be glad to email or talk with you!
