About Katie
Long, long ago, in the early 2000s, I went to Pratt Institute for creative writing, so I very much enjoy teaching and writing myself. I also make mixed media collages and draw and paint pictures of my friend's pets wearing fun outfits.
Also long ago in the 2000s I worked, studied, and performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade in multiple forms of long-form improv. I stage managed for them, as well as smaller off-broadway productions. I also worked in TV, for Comedy Central commercials, as a PA.
I have now worked for fourteen wonderful years in New York City schools. I possess a passion for child-centered learning, allowing students to understand and grow from their powerful agency. As an educator, I am also passionate about emergent studies, and project-based learning as I believe this is the type of style and thinking that will lead us to the future of education. I go to work every day excited to learn with my students, teach them what I know, and learn from them as well. They're also really funny and they're the best to be around.

I epitomize efficiency and effectiveness as a tutor through my meticulous approach to tailoring pre-made lessons and crafting personalized 1:1 sessions. My dedication to nurturing the holistic development of each child sets me apart, incorporating mindfulness and meditation techniques to foster a safe and comfortable learning environment. I also find it important to establish a stong relation with the family as well as the child, as children always learn best with a team.
One of my strengths lies in my ability to adapt pre-made lessons to suit the unique needs and learning styles of my students. By carefully assessing their strengths, weaknesses, and preferences, I modify existing materials to ensure maximum relevance and engagement. Whether it's adjusting the pace of learning, incorporating additional examples, or introducing supplementary resources, I ensure that every lesson is optimized for my students' success.
Furthermore, my commitment to personalized learning extends beyond pre-made materials. I invest time and effort into crafting bespoke 1:1 lessons tailored specifically to address my student's challenges and goals. Through thorough communication and assessment, I identify areas for improvement and design targeted exercises and activities to address them effectively. This tailored approach not only enhances learning outcomes but also cultivates a sense of empowerment and ownership in my students.
Central to my teaching philosophy is the integration of mindfulness and meditation practices into my tutoring sessions. Recognizing the importance of creating a conducive environment for learning, I incorporate techniques to promote relaxation, focus, and emotional well-being. By encouraging my students to cultivate mindfulness, I help them develop resilience, self-awareness, and emotional regulation skills, which are invaluable for academic success and personal growth.
In my sessions, learning transcends the mere acquisition of knowledge; it becomes a holistic journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Through my adeptness at tailoring lessons, combined with my mindfulness-based approach, I create a nurturing space where students feel supported, understood, and motivated to excel. My commitment to the holistic development of my students makes me not only an efficient tutor but also a compassionate mentor who inspires lifelong learning and personal transformation.
