About Ivan

Hi, I'm Ivan - a lover of maths and teaching. I have over three years experience of tutoring maths 1:1 and in groups. I have worked within a school environment and privately. I am calm and patient yet find excitement in seeing students begin to become more confident young mathematicians. I achieved an A* in both Maths and Further Maths A Level and have recently completed a Masters degree in cognitive studies which has provided me with a more complete understanding of how learning happens.

About the lesson

My lessons aim to
(1) secure understanding by addressing gaps in foundational knowledge through well-thought-out models and clear explanations;
(2) develop the mindsets required for students to grow into more capable mathematicians;
(3) in particular, arm students with effective strategies for tackling the “annoying” problem-solving questions that most students leave blank.

I use a heuristic-based approach to give students intuitive techniques that allow them to quickly unlock questions they would previously get stuck on. In my experience, this is far more beneficial than simply working through a solution to a specific question. My students leave lessons with reproducible strategies for solving unfamiliar questions that examiners use to try to catch them out.

A typical lesson will involve a warm-up activity of mixed questions. Based on what the student struggles with I will then provide the student with clear model solutions and personalised flashcards for them to make. I will then test the student's ability to replicate my model for a similar problem before providing them with exam-style questions to practice their new knowledge on.
