About Brian

I have about 5 years of experience tutoring subjects such as math and computer programming. With my level of chess play, which is just above a 1100 rating on chess-dot-com , I can definitely tutor a beginning chess player to improve their understanding of the game. I am also very aware of how to avoid bad chess habits and how to look for good moves. My favorite chess openings to play are the Ruy Lopez with white, and the French Defense with black, though I'm happy to explore different openings with students, if they are curious.

Similar to how I tutor math, I want to help students learn chess so they don't feel intimidated by it and can enjoy it as much as I do!

My lessons would be strictly for beginners, but I can also share my personal strategies to reach a rating of 1100+ on chess-dot-com or its equivalent.

This could range from being completely new to chess, or wanting to have a good understanding of how to play better after knowing the rules. Here is a list of topics that I would cover.

- How the pieces move, and how they capture
- How to move pieces well at the beginning of the game
- How to win with checkmate, and the conditions for stalemate
- How to checkmate with two queens, two rooks, king + queen, and king + rook
- Understanding the value of pieces and what captures are usually good (ex: losing a knight to capture a rook)
- Special tactics (pin, fork, skewer, double attack, etc.)
