How do I teach? To quote George Carlin, my favorite thinker (and comedian), I use "simple, honest, direct language." I explain, but I’m not over-explanatory. I don’t talk at the chalkboard/whiteboard just to hear myself talk; I am a COMMUNICATOR, and I look at the students quite often -- hoping (and usually succeeding) -- to see the light bulbs go on over their heads multiple times during a class meeting.
Much of teaching mathematics involves rules and/or a process. If they require rules, I list them on one side of the board, under the header THE RULES, and I leave them there for the entire lecture… and I reference them as often as I have to do so. If a process is required, I list them on the other side of the board, under the header THE PROCESS, and I leave them there for the entire lecture… and I reference them as often as I have to do so. I go through all the details. For instance: Step 1, subtract 7 from both sides… Step 2, square both sides… Step 3, add 2a to both sides… I go over each step, step by step, multiple times with examples, until I’m certain the class understands.
I use logic, reason, and common sense to get my point across. Occasionally, I will also use my (admittedly) eclectic sense of humor, including a few silly songs and other fun things from popular culture and the Internet. I usually succeed in communicating these mathematical concepts to my students, because it has been VERY RARE that I’ve had a student that failed the course.
I have had too many students come see me in my office, just before the first class meeting for the semester, telling me of their woes in past mathematics classes; they are afraid of similar confusing times in my course. I tell them from experience that the book makes a big difference, and the instructor makes a big difference. I tell my students of my style of explaining math concepts in simple language, without being condescending. Also, I tell them that “I will do everything in my power to ensure that you fairly earn the highest grade possible. I’m not out to fail you; this is not teacher vs. student… this is teacher and student (for the next four months) vs. the rest of the world… for the rest of your life. You will get every tip, every trick, and every mnemonic (memory) device that I can think of that will assist you in this class. I'M HERE FOR YOU.”
