• 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  I first became fascinated with Media Studies during my A-Levels when I realised how much the media shapes our world. Whether it's news coverage, advertising, or film, media has a profound influence on our perceptions and behaviours. However, it was during the lockdown that my interest in private tutoring really developed. With schools moving online, I saw how many students were struggling to stay engaged and keep up with their studies. I had to adapt quickly, finding new ways to make lessons interactive and accessible. I loved breaking down concepts and seeing that 'lightbulb' moment when they truly understood something over online calls. This experience reinforced my passion for innovative teaching styles, as I realised how impactful tailored support could be in helping students navigate challenging times.

• 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  Media Studies is an exciting subject because it blends theory and practice, allowing students to analyse and create media. I particularly enjoy teaching representation in the media, how different groups are portrayed, and how this affects society. The evolution of digital media is also fascinating-how platforms like TikTok and YouTube are shaping content creation. If I had to choose a less enjoyable topic, it might be newspapers-not because they're unimportant, but they can be a bit dry Having said that, it does make it easier to look at newspapers more objectively.

• 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  During my time at university, I had an incredible documentary film lecturer who truly shaped my passion for the subject. Their enthusiasm for storytelling, combined with a deep understanding of how documentaries can challenge perspectives and drive social change, was inspiring. They encouraged us to think critically about the ethics of documentary filmmaking, pushing us to question whose stories are being told and how they are framed.
  
  What stood out most was their ability to balance theory with practice-introducing us to groundbreaking films while also giving us the freedom to experiment with our own projects. Their feedback was always constructive and pushed me to refine my storytelling skills. Watching them speak so passionately about the power of real-life narratives made me realise that documentary film isn't just about capturing reality; it's about shaping how we see and understand the world.
  
  Their influence stayed with me, and to this day, I try to bring the same level of passion and critical thinking into my own teaching.

• 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  A good tutor needs patience, adaptability, and enthusiasm. Every student learns differently, so being able to tailor explanations and teaching styles is key. Encouraging curiosity and critical thinking is also important-especially in Media Studies, where questioning the media is essential!

• 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  One of the most memorable moments in my teaching career was when I introduced a quiz show format to my GCSE Media Studies class. We were covering media industries, audience engagement, and the structure of television formats, so I decided to turn the lesson into an interactive game show. I split the class into teams, gave them buzzers and had them compete in rounds that tested their knowledge of media theories, TV regulations, and audience demographics.
  
  What made it particularly rewarding was how engaged the students became-suddenly, complex concepts like Uses and Gratifications Theory or Ofcom regulations weren't just abstract ideas; they were part of a fast-paced, competitive challenge. Some students who were usually quieter in discussions became the most enthusiastic participants.
  
  The best part was when they had to create and pitch their own quiz show format, thinking about target audiences, sponsorship, and broadcast platforms. It was incredible to see their creativity flourish, and many of them said it was one of their favourite lessons.

• 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

  One challenge is overcoming the misconception that Media Studies isn't a 'serious' subject. Some people see it as just watching films, but in reality, it involves deep analysis, critical thinking, and understanding societal issues. Another challenge is keeping up with the rapidly evolving digital media landscape-what's relevant today might be outdated next year!

• 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  My passion lies in both teaching and the ever-evolving nature of media. I love helping students develop critical thinking skills and seeing them engage with the subject in creative ways. But beyond that, what excites me most is that Media Studies is always changing-new platforms, technologies, and trends constantly reshape the way we consume and create media.
  
  Because of this, I see myself as both a teacher and a lifelong learner. Whether it's analysing how AI is influencing content creation, exploring the latest developments in streaming platforms, or discussing the changing role of journalism, I'm always learning alongside my students. This constant evolution keeps the subject fresh and exciting, and it's incredibly rewarding to bring that sense of curiosity into my teaching.

• 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

  I bring enthusiasm, real-world examples, and a tailored approach to each student's needs. I don't just teach the subject-I help students engage with it in a way that's meaningful to them, whether through pop culture, gaming, social media, or traditional media. I make learning interactive and relevant, ensuring students leave not only with knowledge but with critical thinking skills they'll use for life.
