Lessons can be taken with a view to working towards grade exams, preparing for performance or simply for fun. Regardless of the aim, I always make learning relaxed and fun and much of my approach is centred around keeping students motivated and enjoying their journey through learning.
Lessons typically include work on technique, music theory, working on current repertoire and improvisation and sight reading. To a greater or lesser extent (depending upon each student’s goals) I incorporate building an understanding of how music is put together including comparison and analysis of repertoire so as to see and understand the patterns within. Many of my students play and improvise using chords (in many different styles) either in addition to or instead of conventional score reading. Students have gone on to study music at the Royal Academy of Music and many other prestigious destinations and several are now professional musicians and teachers themselves.
In addition to various other musical achievements I won gold at the Woodley Festival of Music and Arts Piano Championship in 2013, performing a programme of Bach, Debussy and Schumann. In addition I have worked as a consultant for Trinity College London, helping to compile the repertoire for the 2020 piano grade syllabus and as a judge for their young composers competition.
I play and perform a variety of music from composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin to Gershwin, show tunes and the jazz standards. My main musical passion, however, is teaching. Working with students studying for grades or just for pleasure, learning Beethoven Piano Sonatas or Rodgers and Hammerstein, sheet music or jazz notation, I have developed a unique blend of approaches that I tailor to the individual student. Having taught students from 5 to 85, I strive to make the learning experience as enjoyable and productive as possible.

Chris has been teaching me piano since 2021 and is a born teacher. He has helped me go from beginner to (almost Grade 4) which is no mean feat for an adult learner. Chris is so knowledgeable and knows how to get the best out of his students. Highly recommend!
Chris has taught two of my children and I cannot recommend him more highly. He is absolutely delightful, as well as being a great teacher, who tailors lessons to his students’ learning styles. My son absolutely adores his lessons and has progressed incredibly rapidly thanks to Chris’ encouragement and enthusiasm. He puts on an annual piano recital for his students, which really showcases the wide range of musical styles and abilities he can teach - and is a fabulous event to attend!
I have been learning piano with Chris for over a year now and I couldn’t recommend him more. In that short time, with his relentless positivity and support, I have progressed from total novice to playing grade 3 pieces. He finds pieces he knows I would want to play and has encouraged me to develop at my own pace. Chris is an excellent piano teacher!
Chris is an excellent teacher for my son. He tailors his teaching style to suit my son and makes the lessons fun and engaging but also challenges him to improve without taking the joy away.
He is wonderful human and we love the weekly lessons.
