About Josh
Hi! I’m a finance professional and educator with a background in New York City finance and financial markets. I was awarded full Dean Scholarships throughout undergraduate and graduate schools, earning both my Bachelor’s degree and my STEM-designated Master’s in Finance (Top 3 ranked in USA) in the heart of New York City, where I focused on investment applications, financial markets, corporate finance, financial statement analysis, statistical decision-making, and computational finance with Python.
I’ve had the opportunity to work in New York’s finance environment and gain firsthand exposure to how financial concepts translate into real-world business and investment decisions. I enjoy teaching finance because it combines analytical thinking, problem-solving, and an understanding of how businesses, markets, and investors actually operate.
My teaching style is practical and straightforward. I don’t believe finance should feel like a collection of complicated formulas to memorize. I focus on helping students understand the logic behind the numbers so they can approach problems confidently and apply what they learn to new situations. Whether you’re learning finance from scratch, preparing for an exam, or trying to understand markets and investments at a deeper level, I aim to make the material clear, engaging, and relevant.
I also bring a unique perspective from my athletic background. I competed at the highest levels of swimming, including as a Division I student-athlete and as a professional swimmer representing South Africa internationally. Being a competitive athlete taught me discipline, consistency, resilience, and how much difference the right coach can make — lessons that strongly influence the way I teach.
Outside of finance and teaching, I enjoy fitness, exploring cities, art and music, playing piano, traveling, and learning languages. I speak French and Afrikaans in addition to English and conversational Spanish.
I’m excited to help students not only improve their grades, but develop the confidence and practical understanding to succeed in finance and beyond.

I have 8 years of experience teaching and tutoring students in both academic and performance-based settings, with a particular focus on finance and test preparation. My academic background includes a BSc in Business and a top 3 ranked STEM-designated Master of Science in Finance in the USA, where I developed a strong foundation in financial markets, investments, corporate finance, financial statement analysis, economics, accounting, and quantitative analysis.
I have taught finance to students and have also tutored the LSAT, giving me experience adapting my approach to different learning styles, academic levels, and goals. My finance expertise includes financial markets, investment concepts, corporate finance, financial statement analysis, financial management, economics, accounting, and quantitative problem-solving. I also have experience with Excel-based financial analysis and computational finance using Python.
My teaching methodology is centered on understanding rather than memorization. I break complex concepts into manageable steps, explain the reasoning behind formulas and frameworks, and use practical examples to connect theory to real-world financial situations. I encourage students to ask questions and challenge assumptions, because I believe the strongest learning happens when a student understands not just what the answer is, but why it is correct.
My professional experience in New York's finance environment has also given me practical exposure to financial analysis, markets, lending, business decision-making, and financial modeling. I enjoy bringing this real-world perspective into lessons so that students can see how the concepts they are learning are actually used in professional finance.
I also have extensive experience as a swimming instructor and competitive athlete. I competed at the Division I level on a full Dean's scholarship and previously competed professionally and internationally for South Africa. Coaching and competing at this level taught me how to set measurable goals, identify weaknesses, build structured improvement plans, and adapt instruction to the individual — principles that I apply directly to teaching.
Above all, I aim to create a supportive and challenging learning environment. Whether a student is struggling with the fundamentals or looking to take their finance knowledge to an advanced level, I tailor my teaching to their starting point and work toward clear, measurable progress.
