About Kathryn
Hello! I'm Kathryn, and I'm passionate about helping students discover the power and beauty of English Literature whilst achieving the grades they deserve.
I'm currently completing my PGCE in Secondary English at UCL Institute of Education, one of the top teacher training programmes in the country. This means I'm training with the latest teaching methods, learning from experts in English education, and staying completely up-to-date with exam board requirements and marking criteria.
What I love most about teaching English is that moment when a student suddenly "gets it" - when Shakespeare's language clicks into place, when they see a pattern they've never noticed before, or when they write an essay they're genuinely proud of. Those moments are why I teach.
I've been tutoring English for several years and have worked with students of all abilities and backgrounds. Some of my students have been high achievers aiming for top grades, whilst others have been struggling with confidence and needed patient support to build their skills from the ground up. I genuinely enjoy working with both - every student deserves to feel capable and confident in English.
My approach is structured but flexible. I focus heavily on exam technique because I know that's what ultimately determines grades, but I also work hard to make literature genuinely interesting and relevant. English shouldn't feel like a chore - when students understand why texts matter and what they're really saying, the analysis becomes so much easier.
I specialise in close reading and essay writing. Many of my students come to me struggling to analyse language effectively or structure their arguments clearly. Through targeted practice and detailed feedback, I help them develop these skills systematically. I break down complex techniques into manageable steps and build confidence gradually.
What sets me apart is my ability to make difficult texts accessible. Shakespeare, poetry, 19th-century novels - these can feel intimidating, but they don't have to be. I translate the difficult language, explain the historical context, and help students find entry points into texts that initially seemed impossible.
I'm patient, enthusiastic, and committed to every student's success. I understand that everyone learns differently and at different paces, so I tailor my teaching to suit each individual. Whether you need help understanding "Macbeth," perfecting your essay technique, analysing unseen poetry, or preparing for your GCSEs or A-Levels, I'm here to help you achieve your goals.
If you're looking for a tutor who combines expert knowledge with genuine passion for teaching, who understands current exam requirements, and who will support you every step of the way to your target grade, let's work together.

Teaching Methodology:
I use a student-centred approach that combines building a genuine understanding of literature with mastering exam technique. Each lesson is tailored to the individual student's needs, learning style, and target grade.
My methodology focuses on:
Close reading skills - teaching students to analyse language, structure, and form effectively
Essay writing mastery - developing clear, well-structured arguments with strong textual evidence
Exam technique - understanding mark schemes, examiner expectations, and how to maximise marks
Building confidence - helping students find their own analytical voice and trust their interpretations
Making literature accessible - bringing texts to life and showing their relevance to students' own experiences
Typical Lesson Structure:
Lessons are typically 60 minutes and follow this format:
Review (10 mins) - check understanding from previous lesson, answer questions about homework
New content or skill development (25 mins) - analyse a text, teach a technique, or explore a key theme
Application (20 mins) - student practises essay writing, analyses an extract, or completes an exam-style question
Feedback and next steps (5 mins) - discuss progress, set homework, plan next lesson
I also offer 30-minute lessons for quick essay feedback sessions or targeted exam question practice.
My Qualifications and Experience:
- PGCE Secondary English at UCL Institute of Education - currently training to become a qualified English teacher using the latest pedagogical approaches
- Several years of tutoring experience - worked with students from KS3 through to A-Level
- Strong academic background in English Literature - deep knowledge of set texts, poetry, and literary analysis
Proven results - helped students achieve significant grade improvements and build genuine confidence in their writing
Comprehensive exam board knowledge - familiar with AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and WJEC specifications
My lessons are suitable for:
- KS3 students (Years 7-9) - building foundation skills in reading, writing, and literary analysis
- GCSE students (Years 10-11) - exam preparation for English Literature and English Language (all major exam boards)
- A-Level students (Years 12-13) - advanced literary analysis, essay writing, and exam technique
- 11+ students - verbal reasoning, comprehension, and creative writing preparation
- Adult learners - those returning to study or improving their English skills
- All abilities - from students struggling with basic concepts to high achievers aiming for top grades
I particularly enjoy working with students who:
Find Shakespeare or poetry intimidating
Struggle to structure essays effectively
Need help with close analysis of language and techniques
Are preparing for mock or final exams
Want to improve their creative writing skills
Need a confidence boost in their analytical abilities
What Students Can Expect:
✓ Patient, encouraging teaching that builds confidence
✓ Clear explanations of difficult texts and concepts

My Teaching Style:
I'm approachable, enthusiastic, and genuinely passionate about English Literature. I believe every student can improve their grades and develop a love of reading with the right support. I make literature accessible and relevant, showing students that these texts have something meaningful to say to them.
I don't believe in one-size-fits-all teaching. Some students need help with understanding Shakespeare's language, others with structuring essays, and others with close analysis techniques. I tailor my approach to meet each student's individual needs.
Homework and Resources:
I provide students with:
Personalised revision materials for their set texts
Practice exam questions and model answers
Essay plans and analytical frameworks
Quotation banks and key themes guides
Technique identification and analysis practice
Homework is set after each lesson (optional but recommended) to reinforce learning and give students practice applying new skills.
