About Jemma

I’m a passionate and approachable English tutor with extensive experience in teaching a variety of qualifications, including Entry Level, Functional Skills, and Cambridge IGCSE. Currently, I work in a specialist school for autistic learners, tailoring my approach to meet the unique needs of each student. Many of the learners I work with are also studying for AQA GCSE English Literature and Language, a specification I know well from my years of experience and work as an examiner.

My approach to teaching goes beyond academic success; I focus on building strong, supportive relationships with students. I create a safe, motivating environment where they can challenge themselves and develop both their confidence and skills in English. I believe in nurturing a genuine love for literature, and I stay connected to the world of books by running a book club and attending literary events in Cambridge.

As an AQA examiner, I bring valuable insight into the exam process, helping students meet the mark scheme’s requirements while staying true to their own voices in writing. Whether working with students who need to improve their exam technique or those seeking to reignite their interest in English, I tailor each lesson to their individual learning needs.

My lessons, available in one- or two-hour sessions, are carefully designed to be structured yet flexible, challenging yet supportive. Each begins with a check-in and a clear outline of our learning intention, followed by a low-pressure warm-up activity to engage and focus the mind. From there, we move into the core of the session, which is always tailored to the student’s needs and goals.

I support students working on a range of exam boards, but many of the learners I work with follow the AQA GCSE specifications. I have extensive experience with these texts and papers, and draw on my examiner expertise to offer targeted, practical support. Whether we’re developing analytical writing, revising key texts, or building exam technique, I guide students through each step with clear strategies and personalised feedback.

Texts I regularly teach include:
- Shakespeare ('Macbeth', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Much Ado About Nothing')
- 19th-century fiction ('A Christmas Carol', 'The Sign of the Four')
- Modern drama ('An Inspector Calls')
- Poetry from the Power and Conflict and Love and Relationships clusters (AQA)

I also work with learners on Functional Skills and Entry Level qualifications, and I support Cambridge IGCSE students with both exam preparation and coursework guidance.

My lessons are known for being well-paced, purposeful, and responsive. I aim to help every student feel understood and empowered, using a blend of questioning, discussion, and high-quality resources. Many students who arrive feeling unsure about English leave with not only better grades, but a renewed sense of confidence and enjoyment in the subject.

Details

As I do not own a car, for in-person lessons held away from my home, I include travel rates to cover the additional cost and time spent travelling. These rates are flexible and can be discussed on a case-by-case basis to ensure we find a suitable arrangement.

In addition, I do not charge for lesson materials, but I may occasionally provide resources such as worksheets, reading materials, or practice papers to support your progress. If you wish to book a classroom for our session (in the case of needing a larger or more formal setting), this may incur an additional fee, but I will always make sure to discuss and confirm this with you in advance.

I am DBS checked for your peace of mind, and I currently work with several students outside of this platform, ensuring a wide range of experience and reliability. Should you have any further questions or specific requests regarding lesson structure, materials, or travel arrangements, please don't hesitate to reach out—I’m more than happy to tailor everything to suit your needs.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I discovered my passion for teaching English during the COVID pandemic. There I was, working from home in a job that left me feeling drained and uninspired. The stress wasn't the issue-I've always thrived under pressure-but I started questioning if the stress was worth it. I've always been a voracious reader and lover of literature, and teaching seemed like the perfect way to share that passion. When I needed to step away from the classroom for personal reasons, private tutoring became my lifeline. It kept my professional skills sharp and allowed me to experience the joy of those 'lightbulb moments' with students-when everything just clicks.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English, and I absolutely love diving into classic and contemporary literature with my students. Discussing themes, character development, and the author's intent always sparks engaging conversations. I enjoy dissecting poetic techniques and unravelling complex narratives. On the flip side, while grammar and punctuation are crucial, they aren't as thrilling to teach. However, I always strive to make these topics as fun and interactive as possible.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I was lucky enough to have had several incredible English teachers in secondary school; however, there was one in particular who made literature come alive. She had this magical ability to connect every lesson to real-life experiences, making even the most daunting texts feel relatable. Her passion was infectious, and she encouraged me to explore my love for literature deeply. She wasn't just a teacher; she was a mentor and a constant source of inspiration.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs to be patient, adaptable, and empathetic. It's essential to understand that every student learns differently and at their own pace. Being able to explain concepts in multiple ways and creating a supportive, encouraging environment is key. Enthusiasm for the subject is also crucial-if you're excited about the material, your students will be too!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my most cherished memories from school was when we created and performed our own play to commemorate the abolition of slavery at the Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. This experience was profoundly educational; it immersed me in the history of the slave trade in a way that traditional classroom learning couldn't quite access. Through this project, I learned the importance of perspective and empathy, lessons that have deeply influenced my approach to teaching.
Reenacting historical events or literary scenes allows students to engage with the material on a personal level, transforming abstract concepts into tangible experiences. This method not only fosters a deeper understanding but also helps students develop empathy and a more nuanced perspective. Encouraging students to embody characters and situations makes the learning process dynamic and memorable, which is why I continue to incorporate such activities into my teaching today.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One challenge I faced during my time in the classroom was making classic literature accessible and engaging for all students. Not everyone is immediately drawn to Shakespeare or Dickens, but I've found that by connecting the themes to modern-day issues or personal experiences, I can spark interest and understanding. Also, keeping up with diverse learning needs requires constant adaptation and creativity.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is storytelling in all its forms. Whether through literature, film, or even a well-crafted lesson plan, I love the power of a good story to educate, inspire, and connect people. Teaching allows me to share this passion daily, helping students find their own voices and stories.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

What makes me a Superprof is my genuine enthusiasm for English and my commitment to my students' success. I bring creativity, adaptability, and a touch of humour to my lessons, ensuring they are engaging and memorable. I'm not just here to teach-I'm here to inspire, support, and celebrate every achievement, no matter how small. Plus, I've got a knack for making even the trickiest grammar rules a little less terrifying!
