About Sorrel

I am a BA Economics Undergraduate student at the University of Reading and I have been studying Economics for 3 years, including my A-Level and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) study time. I have been tutoring for a year, but became a subject ambassador 3 years ago, where I became a peer for younger Economics students. From a young age I have been enticed by the economic World and this influences many decisions I make. For my Extended Project Qualification, a 5,500 written report and 22,000 word research project, I researched the economic impacts of immigration of UK immigrants from 2000-2008, which achieved Grade A. I have participated in work experience with the Royal Navy's press office, where I learnt the value of the Navy to the UK economy. In my spare time, I enjoy reading economic literature and watching economic documentaries. I tend to avoid the status quo, thus my interaction with the book 'Doughnut Economics' by Kate Raworth has provided a new outlook on economics which cannot be taught in schools, making me a well-rounded economist. My interests peak in the areas of financial micro and macroeconomics, where I spend a lot of my time researching the causes of the 2008 financial crash. I have a strong passion for Economics, and the potential of instilling my drive into students is a thrill like no other.

I am a versatile individual and tailor my sessions to the students learning capabilities. Typically, I approach the basic fundamentals of the topic, apply to a case study and then use theoretical versus real life analysis. Thus, the student can relate the fundamentals to a case study which makes the topic more understandable. Theoretical analysis helps the student to understand what should happen relative to economic/econometric models, versus what happens in reality e.g. the 2008 Sub Prime mortgage crash, or the stock market, are two thorough examples. The way I explain my approach will vary depending on the way the student learns best; i.e. visual learners will be equipped with more diagrams e.g. circular flow of income model, whilst audio learners will be equipped with spoken tutorials and YouTube video support, such as EconDal.
