About Joel

I have been in the teaching industry for most of my life. I taught 4 years as an ESL teacher in Japan. One of my positons was teaching a freshmen class at a local technical college. My wife and I taught private and small group lessons to over 200 students. Being a native speaker of American English was a plus for my students. Learning American English gave my students the confidence to use their second language in their daily conversation. Some of my students went on to pursue careers in English Translation, Interpretation and teaching ESL in their local school districts in Japan.

I am a secondary education teacher that taught mostly to middle and high school students. I also enjoy teaching Adults - college age and post college age students. I have to tutored to private students and small group classes having 5-8 students.

The techniques and methods I use to instruct are: discussion starters, basic grammer sentences, grammer stories, grammer practice worksheets, simple sentences, writing in English, Everyday English - using simple questions, functional English, everyday dialogues, role-playing, easy readers, English in the workplace, everyday idioms, phonics and pronunciation, English foundations and word banks.

I use a simple 5 step plan in my teaching:
1. Assessment - Recognizing students needs and pairing them with a student’s strengths. Assessing the goals of a student is important for implementing an education plan.
2. Development of Personal Education Plan - Once I have determined the student’s needs, goals, and strengths, I will tailor each lesson to cater to these details. For example, if a student is a visual learner, I will ensure that lessons incorporate aids such as graphs, charts, pictures…etc.
3. Explanation of Personal Education Plan - It is important that a learner understands the reason behind his/her Personal Education Plan. Positive communication between the teacher and student is imperative in making the learning environment successful.
4. Modeling - I believe in a rich one-on-one experience where students benefit from the individual attention. Once the student understands the exercise, I will model several examples to clarify and explain the specific lesson.
5.Guided Practice - The final step is for the ongoing interactions between student and myself. The goal in this learning step is to gradually release responsibility to the student at an appropriate pace. This step also helps me to recognize areas that continue to be difficult for the student and can readdress these problem areas before moving on in his/her learning.
