About Kenny
My approach to teaching saxophone blends technical precision with creative exploration, aiming to cultivate both skill and artistic voice. I prioritize essential fundamentals including breath control, embouchure setup, posture, finger agility, and rhythmic accuracy, which provide a foundation for healthy, confident playing. Developing tone is a key focus; I work with students on articulation, phrasing, vibrato, and dynamics to help them communicate emotion and style. Music theory and ear training are integrated seamlessly through repertoire and improvisation, reinforcing understanding while keeping lessons engaging. Improvisation is introduced early with approachable exercises and gradually expanded to build spontaneity and musical ownership. I tailor lessons to each student's musical tastes and aspirations, whether jazz, blues, classical, or popular genres. Technology like recording software, slow-downer apps, and backing tracks plays an important role in motivating practice and supporting creativity. One of my proudest moments involved guiding a student who struggled with tone and confidence to become a skilled soloist who regularly performs with their school band. I strive to create a nurturing learning space where students develop technique, express creativity, and cultivate a lifelong passion for saxophone.

Teaching saxophone for me is about nurturing both technical proficiency and artistic identity within each student. I emphasize foundational skills such as breath support, embouchure formation, finger agility, articulation, and producing a warm, resonant tone—skills that provide the necessary freedom for expressive playing. But technique is only one part of the journey.
I also encourage students to develop a rich musical ear through focused listening exercises, transcription work, and ear training drills to enhance their understanding of melodic and harmonic relationships. Improvisation is a cornerstone of my lessons, where I help students explore scales, chord tones, and rhythmic motifs to build solos that are both coherent and personal.
We study the language of jazz by analyzing the phrasing and emotional nuance of legendary players, drawing inspiration while encouraging originality. I incorporate modern technology—recording apps, backing tracks, and metronomes—to facilitate productive practice and provide objective feedback. My teaching environment is collaborative and patient, fostering curiosity and confidence. I’ve witnessed students transform from unsure beginners into passionate improvisers who express themselves with authenticity and joy, which continually fuels my passion for teaching.
