About Samantha

Hi! My name is Sam and I am 19 years old. I graduated in 2022 from Pymble Ladies College. I enjoy humanity subjects and completed the following subjects in my HSC: Advanced English, Legal Studies, Modern History, Business Studies and Drama. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Communication and a Bachelor of Law at UTS.

I am extremely passionate about helping students to do their personal best! Senior school years can feel scary as the real world approaches and younger years can be unsettling as you are constantly learning new skills and trying to find what your strengths are. Stress is normal, and I want to be there to support you and make you feel comfortable asking for my help.

I also think that work-life balance is crucial to students. I work, play sports, study and attend a Sydney University College so it is fair the say I've learnt the importance of time management - although it took some time! I am more than happy to work around you as I know life can be busy.

About the lesson

English in year 11 or 12 can feel daunting as teachers expect that you know how to write essays, can do short answers and can write under timed conditions under pressure. The topics also begin to get challenging and encourage you to think critically. As a result, lots of people memorise essays word by word and rewrite them in the exam. Yes, it may work for one assessment, but when you get to the HSC and realise you could be asked 20 different questions across 4 different topics in 5 subjects, learning to write on the spot will be your best friend!

I encourage a "practice makes perfect approach". Rather than rewriting the same essay over and over, I like to get students to respond to different questions and texts.

English can also feel challenging as people start to think that you need to use difficult terminology to do well. In my opinion, doing well in English is about writing in a sophisticated manner, using simple words, that way your argument is clear - trust me... the markers find it annoying when you look up "other words for..."

Because of this, I use simple language, with challenging ideas when teaching because there's nothing worse than not knowing what your teacher is trying to say.

I also teach many other humanity subjects and if you are interested in anything to do with writing or study techniques, I am more than happy to help :)
