About Susan
I believe that learning is a life-long journey and that you're never too old to start learning something new! I have 3 grown up children who I've supported through their learning journeys at school and university. I have the added benefit of lots of teaching experience and excellent relationships with many parents and children who I have worked with over the years. Moreover, I love the English language and its depth and variety. I enjoy reading and writing for its own sake and I understand how important it is for my students to feel confident in English skills.

I have been teaching primary and secondary students for over 14 years, after qualifying with a PGCE and QTS in 2007. I usually teach one-to-one, for 1 hour, depending on the needs of the student. I have a versatile approach, which bends to the requirements of the student. The main focus is on supporting the student to improve their confidence in English through practising the language in a variety of forms which the student finds interesting and engaging. I encourage students to feel positive about their potential and I am as supportive as possible, giving them the opportunity to experience a broad canon of fiction, non-fiction and poetry that is relevant to their needs and interests. I help students build their confidence in English through conversation practice, spelling and grammar-building activities, comprehension and writing.
My teaching styles vary, depending on the age and prior learning of the student. For example, I use vocabulary games, picture prompts and themed vocabulary, listening activities, questioning, focus on key words in a text, cloze activities and modelling sentence structures and paragraphs of writing to enable students to access and develop their skills in English. The keys to good learning are flexibility in approach, combined with listening carefully to the student and always reviewing and developing the skills learned, which has enabled me to support a lot of students coming from a wide range of educational backgrounds over the years.
