About Daniel

I am an educator with 14 years of classroom teaching experience at the middle school, high school, and college levels.

Most recently, I taught fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade English at Oakridge Private School in Orange, California, for nine years. As the sole middle school English teacher, I independently developed the English/Language Arts curriculum, regularly receiving positive feedback from all stakeholders. I consistently prepared my students to score in the top ten percent nationally on standardized tests and built close relationships and rapport with students and families, fostering a positive, cooperative learning environment.

I previously worked as a full-time substitute teacher at a public high school in upstate New York and taught First Year Composition and introductory creative writing classes at The Ohio State University. In addition, I have worked as a news reporter, newspaper columnist, and Associate Nonfiction Editor of The Journal, Ohio State's award-winning literary magazine.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing (nonfiction) from Ohio State and a BA in English from St. Lawrence University (where I also completed a major in psychology).

About the lesson

As an experienced classroom teacher, I take a collaborative approach to teaching and tutoring. A good lesson is a guided conversation; as a teacher, I lead the way, but I take my cues from my students' thoughts, observations, and questions. I work with English students of all skill levels.
