About Mackenzie

Hi, I’m Mackenzie, an English major at Gettysburg College! I’ve spent a lot of time working with literature, writing essays, and learning how to break down complex texts, and I try to share that in a clear, approachable way.

I know that English assignments can be frustrating or unclear, so I keep sessions pretty relaxed and focused on what you need. We can work through readings together, talk through ideas, or go step by step through an essay, whatever makes things feel more manageable. I usually take a discussion-based approach, asking questions and helping you build your own ideas rather than just giving answers.

I’m patient and flexible, and I understand that everyone works differently. Whether you’re stuck getting started, trying to organize your thoughts, or revising a draft, I’ll meet you where you are and help you move forward.

My goal is to make things clearer and a little less overwhelming, while helping you feel more comfortable with your work over time.

My approach as a tutor is centered on helping students think deeply and confidently about what they read and write, rather than just memorizing formulas for essays. I will focus on building skills in close reading, clear argumentation, and developing original ideas.

In a typical lesson, I like to start by understanding what the student is working on, whether it’s an essay, a specific text, or a skill like thesis writing. From there, we break things down together: analyzing passages, identifying key themes, and shaping strong, arguable claims. I guide students through the writing process step-by-step, from brainstorming to final edits, while encouraging them to develop their own voice. I often use discussion-based techniques, asking questions that push students to think more critically and make their own connections.

What sets me apart is my focus on interpretation and confidence. I'm not just here to correct writing; I help students understand why their ideas work and how to expand them. With experience analyzing a range of authors from Shakespeare to Toni Morrison, as well as film adaptations, I bring a creative and flexible perspective that helps students engage with material in a more interesting way.

My lessons are ideal for middle school, high school, and early college students who want support with essay writing, literary analysis, reading comprehension, or preparing for English coursework. I can also help with assignment-specific work, including papers, discussion prep, and exam review.
