About Steve

Hello everyone, my name is Steve Harisson. I am a degree holder majoring in English for Global Communication. I did partake in many English-related activities during my study year such as community engagement project at a local school, facilitator for an English workshop and so on.

I want to tell the students or anyone that English are so easy to learn!

About the lesson

1. Beginner Level
For students with minimal English proficiency, the focus is on building a foundation through basic grammar structures and short writing tasks.

Techniques:
Explicit Instruction:

Teach basic grammar rules (e.g., subject-verb agreement, simple tenses) explicitly with clear examples.
Use visual aids like charts, flashcards, and diagrams.
Drills and Repetition:

Reinforce grammatical structures through practice, including sentence formation and fill-in-the-blanks exercises.
Use pattern drills (e.g., "I am...", "He is...").
Communicative Activities:

Include speaking activities like role-play and dialogues to apply grammar in conversation.
Example: Practicing present simple tense with “What’s your daily routine?”
Sentence Combining and Scramble Exercises:

Provide scrambled sentences to arrange correctly, improving syntax awareness.
Writing Focus:
Start with sentence writing: subject + verb + object structures.
Use guided writing: Provide sentence starters to ease anxiety.
Example: Write a short paragraph about themselves using basic sentences.

2. Intermediate Level
Intermediate learners need to expand their grammar knowledge and develop paragraph-level writing skills.

Techniques:
Contextualized Grammar Instruction:

Teach grammar through texts, stories, or songs.
Example: Teach past tense through a story-telling activity.
Task-Based Learning (TBL):

Students complete tasks using targeted grammar points.
Example: Writing a recipe to practice imperatives and sequence words.
Error Correction and Feedback:

Use self-correction, peer feedback, and teacher input.
Focus on both formative (process-oriented) and summative (end-product) assessments.
Sentence Expanding and Complex Structures:

Teach relative clauses, modals, conditionals, and phrasal verbs.
Writing Focus:
Shift to paragraph writing: Topic sentence + supporting ideas + concluding sentence.
Introduce cohesion: Teach linking words (and, but, because, however).
Example: Write a descriptive paragraph about a place they’ve visited.

3. Advanced Level
At this stage, students refine their writing skills and use advanced grammar structures accurately.

Techniques:
Genre-Based Instruction:

Teach various writing genres: narrative, persuasive, academic, and argumentative writing.
Focus on the conventions of each genre (e.g., thesis statements for essays).
Process Writing Approach:

Emphasize planning, drafting, revising, and editing.
Use peer reviews to build critical thinking and collaboration skills.
Grammar in Context:

Explore advanced grammar (e.g., passive voice, subjunctive mood, parallel structures) within authentic texts (academic articles, literature).
Error Analysis:

Have students analyze their errors and identify patterns.
Provide individualized grammar lessons based on frequent mistakes.
Corpus-Based Learning:

Use corpus tools (e.g., Google Ngrams) to show how advanced grammar is used in real-world contexts.
Writing Focus:
Practice academic and creative writing:

Essays, reports, research papers, and reflective journals.
Example: Write an argumentative essay on a controversial issue.
Teach editing and proofreading skills to identify stylistic and grammatical issues.

Use rubrics to assess coherence, grammar accuracy, vocabulary use, and argument structure.

2. Recommended Lesson Lengths

30 minutes – For younger learners or focused skills practice
45 minutes – Standard length for most learners
60 minutes – Suitable for advanced learners or multiple topics
90 minutes – For intensive sessions (e.g., exam preparation or in-depth writing)

4. Beginner to Advanced Levels:

The teaching methods I shared cover everything from A1 (Beginner) to C2 (Proficient) levels based on the CEFR framework.
This includes foundational grammar for beginners and advanced academic writing for higher-level learners.
Age Groups:

Children (5–10 years): Focus on simple grammar and basic writing tasks (sentence formation).
Teenagers (11–17 years): Develop paragraph writing, introduce essay structures, and more complex grammar.
Adults (18+ years): Target academic or professional English, focusing on coherence, fluency, and precision in writing.
