About Shini

I am a Senior in English Literature at the University of Texas at Austin who has written for several student magazines and who has acted as the editor of one of these magazines. I'm quite new to tutoring, having tutored two students. But what I don't have in experience, I make for in commitment and passion. My last student was about to enter high school and while she felt confident in STEM and subjects that had specific answers, she needed help with her English literature analytical skills and writing skills. She's now about to complete her first semester in high school and has done very well in her English class! I'm so proud of her!

Concerning my background, I've had a very well-rounded liberal arts education, studying everything from linguistics to philosophy to psychology which are subjects that I find quite helpful when teaching the different facets of English literature. I offer a foundation for students in how to approach different texts and medias: novels, short stories, plays, poetry, songs, and films. My primary objective is to get my students to think critically and to be confident enough to entertain and explore their theories about the texts they're reading.

About the lesson

I offer the first lesson free to see if we're the right fit. After I've gotten a sense of where my student needs improvement, I begin with a brief outline of what we'll be working on over our tutoring sessions together. I have a pretty structured teaching approach with PowerPoints, homework, pop quizzes, and tests. I like to pick texts that my student might already be reading in class or texts which they are excited and curious to read. Then, I also like to include texts that push them out of their comfort zones. For example, I wanted my last student to really listen to the nuances in sound when reading poetry, so we began looking at nonsense poetry (Lewis Carrol) in order to prioritize sound over semantics. We can also practice for standardized tests that involve writing or English Lit (SAT, AP English Literature and Composition).
But although this structured form of teaching is how I've taught in the past, I think it's very important to tailor one's teaching approach to each student and how they learn. I can also use a more active, performance-based teaching method for students with an attention deficit or hyperactive behavior. Acting out texts can sometimes connect students with what they're reading.
Either way, I'm excited to get to know you and understand how you learn best!
To accommodate during COVID times, I'm also very comfortable with teaching over Zoom.
