About John
I have an upper second class degree in English Literature from a prestigious Russell Group University. Since graduating, I have worked as a freelance writer, having written scripts for YouTube channels and podcasts. Beyond this, I have also written copy for the props department for Netflix programming. This has given me the insight into the practical expertise that a degree in English Literature can be applied to. I still love reading fiction and find it constantly informs my work and broadens my sense of what can be achieved in creative opportunities.

The most important aspect for me in teaching English literature is to build a personal connection between students and the text they're analysing. I have always believed that the best way to access a text is to first understand how it impacts you as a reader. From that point onwards, historical context and literary techniques become far more intuitive to understand. It's no secret that one of the greatest hurdles for English Literature is its reputation as a luxury subject without a tangible use in the world. However, with the growth of AI and algorithmic disinformation, media literacy has never been more important in being able to navigate these predatory structures. This skillset starts with studying English Literature and being exposed to the techniques that promote thought and feeling within a reader.
Lessons are 50 minutes as a standard but are customisable if requested. I have experience in tutoring secondary school to GCSE level, with a particular focus on encouraging confidence within students. I am also happy to take on adults who wish to develop their ability to connect with reading. I look forward to hearing from you and developing a stronger bond with reading.
