About Gerry

I’m an English teacher who’s been lucky enough to teach around the world, including Mainland China, Taiwan, and Australia. My journey has taken me from teaching SEND students in the UK to helping Chinese learners master English, giving me a deep appreciation for how differently people learn and express themselves. I love learning about different cultures and traditions. I speak Mandarin and hold a BSc in International Relations and Chinese from the London School of Economics, which included studying abroad in Taiwan, where I also co-authored a published academic paper on culture and communication. That academic background helps me bring context, curiosity, and cross-cultural understanding into my lessons. Outside of teaching, I enjoy hiking, learning Chinese, gardening, reading, and cooking.

About the lesson

My lessons go beyond teaching content: I train students to think like examiners. Whether in English Literature or English Language, I focus on training students to independently identify techniques, literary features, and stylistic choices, so they develop real analytical ability rather than short-term memorisation. I love seeing my students grow in confidence and develop the ability to break down a text, poem, or image they have never come across before. Once those skills are in place, we work on essay structure, argument clarity, and writing style, with a focus on what earns top marks. I achieved A*s in both GCSE and A-Level English Literature and Language, so I know exactly what examiners are looking for. I’m known for my patience and supportive approach, shaped by my experience teaching SEND and ESL learners. I promote creativity, humour, and positive feedback, building confidence as students realise their own progress and potential. Lessons typically last 1–2 hours, depending on focus and level. I provide my own study materials, curated texts, and example essays, and happily proofread work for free as part of the learning process. I’ve taught students aged 6–18 across the UK, China, and Australia, and hold a TEFL certificate and a BSc from LSE, where I also co-authored a published academic paper.
