About Clara

Hi. I'm Clara, a private tutor specialising in English from primary to degree level. I graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2021 with a 1st Class BA (Hons) in English, and since then have been regularly teaching students from 11+ to A Level.

Prior to this, I spent my time at university tutoring privately, mentoring Oxbridge applicants (who have received offers from their desired colleges), and leading classes at local Cambridge schools in my capacity as a tutor for the student-run organisation, Schools Connect, of which I eventually became president. I came up through the IGCSE/Linear A-Level system, but am happy to teach all syllabi, as required. I am also able to provide references upon request.

About the lesson

I'm an enthusiastic and patient teacher, willing to be led by my tutees' needs but always comprehensive and precise in the material I cover.

When working with younger students, I am of the opinion that it's best to focus on 1-3 specific topics per session; knowing even one more principle or how to use a specific tense/structure can really build foundational knowledge. We begin by ascertaining their level of knowledge and their confidence, then we start there and adjust accordingly if need be. I am also always ready to adjust my style--what works for one student may not work for another, and I like to have several different methods for explaining each concept.

With older students (GCSE upwards) conversation is more free-flowing, and we work out our goals for a session or a course before we begin. I can cover both English Language and Literature, on topics ranging from essay structure and proof-reading, to literary themes, to creative writing (plus many more!). I like to offer a range of critical/constructive and positive feedback, and again am happy to adjust to a student's goals and learning styles.
