About Elijah

Qualifications: 4.0+ High School and College GPA, 5 on AP Calc AB and BC, 790/800 Math SAT, National Merit Scholar, Completed all math requirements for an engineering degree

4+ years of Tutoring Experience: I have tutored Middle and High School math for several years. Additionally, I was a TA for College Algebra and Brief Calculus at Arizona State University.

Good with Kids: I have 2 years of experience as a camp counselor at an overnight camp in Northern California, where I worked with children from 3rd to 10th grade. I specialize in the camp's special needs program.

About the lesson

Levels: Everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, Middle School and High School

Teaching Strategy: My goal as a tutor is to ensure that my students get report cards that their parents can be proud of. My teaching strategy is primarily geared toward hands-on problem-solving sessions with the student. I find that the best way to learn math is simply to do more problems. Oftentimes, working through a problem with a teacher is all it takes for a concept to click in a student's brain. I like to start off by working through problems in an area the student struggles in. At first, I do most of the work and explanation. However, as we move through problems, I gradually shift the responsibility to the student until, eventually, the student is solving the problems entirely themselves and understands the concept. I also make sure to give students a chance to brainstorm possible problem-solving ideas before I give an explanation. This way, students can learn how to approach problems they haven't seen before. Lastly, I teach students how to teach themselves. Everyone has a different learning style, but the ability to teach yourself can allow a student to thrive in any environment.

Lesson Plan: I typically let the student dictate the lesson plan. If the student wants to work through a homework assignment, go over a study guide, or review a past exam, we can do that. If a student wants help in a general area, I can teach individual concepts and provide sample problems that we can work through together. Generally, it's best to plan tutoring sessions around what is currently being taught in class or what is being tested on upcoming exams. Like any other skill, math requires practice, which is why I focus my lessons on solving problems hands-on. As we work on problems, I am able to point out where the student is making a mistake and guide them toward understanding.
