About Samuel
I am a mechanical engineering student at the University of Sheffield. I have just finished the first year of my degree and achieved a grade 9 and an A* in maths at GCSE and A levels. Along with engineering, I have an interest in teaching, which I have shown in my previous job roles as a tennis coach and ninja warrior employee, helping younger kids to develop their tennis skills and teaching people of all ages how to get past tricky obstacles. I take genuine pride in seeing people achieve their goals and love to feel like I can help them a bit on the way. I have always had a keen interest in maths, with a fascination for how numbers can be manipulated and applied to learn more and more complex topics. Especially now as I get further into my degree, I get to see and understand the real world applications of the maths I learnt years before. It seems like a bit of a blatantly obvious statement but I find it incredible to think that with the same set of fundamental laws, we've gone from caves to electric circuits and astrophysics. I hope to impart the same passion and wonder onto my students so that they not only learn what they need to attain their academic goals, but they might develop some genuine interest in the subject.

In school, we are taught by going through the curriculum at a predetermined pace rather than a pace specific to the learning needs of the students in the class. The benefit of my teaching is that I aim to carefully identify and address the specific areas the student is struggling with through friendly conversation as well as revision resources that I used myself not that long ago. Maths more than any other subject requires an ability to apply the topics learnt in order to learn new topics, which is why I have often found with myself and others around me that struggling to learn a topic in maths is often as a result of a misunderstanding of some previously learnt content. Having identified what work needs to be done, I plan my lessons in advance using a combination of pdf worksheets, PowerPoints and a whiteboard, the uses of which can be curated to the learning style of the student, in order to deliver the content in as clear and as understandable of a manner as possible. I also use my lessons to help the student with any current schoolwork they are struggling with to ensure that I can help them get the most out of their learning through the school and through me. Having learnt a topic, I find that the best way to make the knowledge stick is to revisit it in the form of exam style questions at spaced intervals that depend on the complexity of the subject and the ease by which the student picked it up. Spacing is an example of a revision technique I was taught and know to be an effective strategy that I can teach to my students for the best results. This is one of several revision strategies I developed at GCSE and A levels which I can teach to the student as well.
