About Madeline

Throughout my high school years, I racked up as much knowledge as I could get in working with kids, engaging with people, and participating in the engineering field. I began with taking a rigorous high school schedule including classes such as AP calculus 1, AP Calculus 2, AP physics, AP Literature, AP Chemistry, AP Biology and AP Language. These classes are equal to college classes. I received A’s in them as well as scoring highly on the AP tests administered by collegeboard. I received a 5/5 score on my AP Calculus 2 test. In addition to these classes, I participated in a FIRST robotics team after school where a group of about 20 kids spent countless hours producing a robot with many mechanical components, weighing about 120 pounds and being anywhere from 4 - 7 feet tall. Through this team, I was able to apply the math, science, and English skills being taught to me in my AP classes. The team also allowed me to work with people regularly. I was the co-captain of the robotics team during my junior and senior year of high school which tasked me with keeping people on task and focused, making sure people were motivated, talking to other teams, professionally reaching out to sponsors and those on education boards, scheduling out the season, and organizing the paperwork and logistics of the team. Many middle school kids come through to meet our team and get help as well, which was a great teaching opportunity for me. Outside of school when I had time, I would tutor two kids in my neighborhood and babysat a few other kids. I tutored seventh grade math to a boy who had trouble staying focused and had a difficult time learning things the traditional way. I also tutored a girl for her eighth grade English class to help in word usage, setting up paragraphs, and the flow of an essay. Babysitting gave me even more experience working with kids and was a really fun time.

I had the same math teacher for three years of high school and something she was great at was incorporating all different learning styles. If someone doesn’t understand something, it’s probably because it’s being told to them in a way they can’t retain it or can’t understand it. I am very flexible with teaching by talking for auditory learners, teaching through example for visual learners, or teaching with hands-on methods for kids that learn by experience. I like to keep kids motivated with what they can do with the math later on because I find that is a very typical question from kids frustrated in math and it’s nice to be able to give them a brief understanding of why this is helpful or applicable in the world. In addition, I feel that kids respond well and want to work more when they are good at something, so once they begin to understand a concept, I like to roll with that and give them positive support so they feel encouraged to keep going and getting more experience with it.
