I am a guide who focus on the basics of subject especially in the subject like mathematics where you can't learn without practice. What is the first thing to learn about mathematics?
In my very humble & peasant opinion, the first thing to learn should be logic. That’s if you’re a pure math student and not an engineering student (no offense to engineers, I salute you).
Logic lays out the foundation for how a proof of any problem can be constructed, and there are different patterns of proof, for example, proof by contradiction, direct proof, contrapositive proof, etc. Pattern = structure = order.
Usually students are introduced to delta-epsilon proofs as the first idea of a proof and I think it just confuses things, set theory and logic concepts should be shown before rigorous calculus proofs. I had a lot of trouble with delta-epsilon proofs at first but when I took a course which included logic, set theory, and proof writing everything clicked for me. But then again, I am quite average and slow-minded.
Regarding this, here is another one of my answers:

First things first.
Math is a problem solving subject.
The key to succeeding in Mathematics is not to study Mathematics; in fact, it doesn't work!
It's constantly working on mathematical problem solving. A lot of problems. All kinds of problems. The more, the merrier! The harder, the better.
Tackling past exam series is one way to go, and to get better at it, preferably under simulated exam conditions
At its core, Math entails and necessitates a thorough understanding of each and every variable, and their inter-relationship, in the formulas and equations.
You also need to spend an inordinate amount of time to understand and work on the proofs, in most instances.
In class, you simply need to pay attention to all the worked examples as shown by your lecturer or professor on the white board, or from your textbook, and then you put your acquired knowledge into your solution working, covering a myriad variety of new problems given in class by your lecturer professor, or taken out from your textbook, all on your own.
Last but not least, you need to dedicate at least one hour every day on your Mathematical problem solving.
