About Monica
I have taught every grade, but have spent most of my time with upper elementary students. I taught 4th grade Math and Science for 7 years and have taught whole group, small group and one-on-one in all domains as aligned with state standards. I have designed lesson plans based on the strengths and needs of my students. It is most important to keep instruction student-centered, meaning that learning tasks should be paced and designed with the student's abilities and zone of proximal development in mind. Scaffolds and supports are given for students to access the content with differentiation in process and product. I strive to meet the needs of every student.

To grasp math conceptual understanding in any area, instruction should first start with concrete exposure using manipulatives and real-world examples. Knowledge is then transfered into representational examples in context, before moving into abstract thinking. Using the C.R.A. strategy, in partner with consistent practice opportunities, any student can achieve conceptual understanding no matter the grade or developmental level.
