About Shenika
Hello students, my name is Mrs. Parson. I work for the Palm Beach County School District in Florida. I have worked for this school district for the past twenty-eight years. I started as a Paraprofessional for the first four years as I was finishing my Elementary Education Degree. I taught 4th grade, math/science for fourteen years and then moved up to teaching 5th grade math/science for the last 10 years as well as my current position now. I have taught as an educator at the same school for all twenty-four years as well as being a paraprofessional for the first four years in the same school.

Lesson: Dividing by One Digit Divisor using Area Model
Example: 639 divided by 9
What sets me apart is the way I teach division by using the area model box.
Step 1: The dividend, which is the first number, tells us how many columns we would break our box into. For example, because I have three numbers as my dividend number, that tells me that I need to break my box into 3 columns.
Step 2: Find your Roof and House numbers. The Roof numbers are always 1-9, and your House numbers are your multiples of the divisor, which is 9.
Step 3: Divide by working with one column at a time to see how close you get to each Roof and House number without going over the house number.
Step 4: Repeat step 3 until you complete the last column.
