About Ben
I am an avid language-learner who has consistently fuelled my growth and interest in languages since the age of 14. I achieved my GCSE in Spanish in Year 9 and A-Level by Year 10. I then went on to study Modern Languages at Oxford for my undergraduate. I enjoyed the languages component that I went on to study a Masters in Modern Languages, also at Oxford, where I achieved a Distinction. I have cultivated my love for Spanish through music immersion and travel over many years, visiting Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile. I regularly speak with friends I have gained from my time in these countries.
As a broader language student, I have continued to study many languages, lately moving forward with the Mandarin that I also started learning at age 14. I also challenge myself with Portuguese, which has similarities with Spanish and which I enjoy speaking in Spanish-Portuguese language exchanges. Although I am not teaching these languages, it is important that my students can see that I continue to study and have to continually work with the elements of reading, writing and grammar that will face you in your exams.

Each 60-minute lesson is carefully structured to build both confidence and precision, which is essential for success at A-Level. We begin by revisiting prior learning through short, focused tasks, helping to reinforce key concepts and quickly identify any gaps. New grammar is then introduced in a clear, manageable way, with an emphasis on understanding when and why structures are used—not just how to form them.
From there, I take my students through a series of increasingly independent activities: first practising in a supported way, then applying their knowledge in more open-ended tasks such as discussions or problem-solving exercises. This ensures that grammar is not learned in isolation, but actively used in realistic contexts similar to those found in exams.
Each lesson also includes opportunities for quick-fire speaking and translation practice, helping students develop fluency and accuracy under time pressure. We finish with a short consolidation task to reinforce subtle distinctions, and set targeted homework that feeds into the following lesson.
Overall, I have built this approach to balance clarity, challenge, and engagement—supporting students not only in mastering complex grammar, but in using it confidently and effectively in exam situations.

Went from barely scraping a C to achieving a Distinction, and I genuinely couldn’t have done it without Ben.
I worked with Ben for a full year ahead of my A-Level French exams and the difference he made was extraordinary. When we started, I was really struggling with the more complex grammar and my confidence in speaking was basically zero. By the time I sat my exams, I felt genuinely prepared in a way I never expected to.
What sets Ben apart is that he never just drills you on rules and moves on. He actually takes the time to make sure you understand why a structure works the way it does, which means it actually sticks. Every lesson felt purposeful, and I always left knowing exactly what I needed to practise before the next one.
His patience is remarkable. There were weeks where I came in having not done enough prep, or where the same concept just wasn’t clicking, and he never made me feel stupid or frustrated. He just found a different way in.
The lessons themselves are really well structured. We’d review what we’d covered before, tackle something new, then actually use it in speaking or writing tasks that felt like the real exam, not just isolated exercises.
I achieved a Distinction, which I’m still a bit stunned by. A year ago I wasn’t sure I’d even pass. Weekly sessions with Ben were a big part of why that changed. If you’re a student who’s finding French tough, I’d book in with him without hesitation.View more recommendations
