About Alice

My name is Alice, and I am a PhD (Doctorate) student at the University of St Andrews, studying English Literature. In my spare time, I dance, read, play piano and spend time with my friends. I also love to travel!

I have devoted a large portion of my life so far to studying and teaching English, from my time at school to the 3 degrees I have since undertaken. Teaching is my great passion and my goal in life. I have 3 years experience tutoring GCSE and A-Level English Literature and Language, and 1 year experience teaching English Literature to undergraduate classes at St Andrews.

I will bring all of this teaching experience, along with my extensive experience in studying English my and great love of the subject, to our sessions. And, most importantly, I will personalise our sessions to your needs, covering the areas you most need help in and listening carefully to your feedback.

My lessons (typically one hour long) are always personalised to the student. I am able to tutor students working towards their GCSE and A-Level exams, as well as university students working towards their Bachelor degree, in English Literature and/or Language.

In our first session, we will establish learning goals based on the curriculum areas or skills which the student most wants help with. These goals will guide our sessions each week, as we focus on different texts, skills (i.e. close language analysis, essay structuring, revision techniques, persuasive writing, use of secondary criticism, etc.) and topics.

Basic lesson structure:
1. Each lesson will start with a recap of the previous lesson, led by the student.
2. I will then explain the lesson plan for that day and what I hope we will achieve.
3. After this, the lesson will begin, focusing on building understanding and developing skills essential for the students' exams and/or coursework and referring closely to the official marking criteria and objectives from the student's exam board.
4. At the end of each session, we will discuss what topic or skill to cover in the next session, and I may set some preparatory work, or other homework, for the student to complete.

My Qualifications:
1. I have 10 GCSEs: 7 A*s (or 8-9s in the number system) and 3 As (or 7-8s in the number system). This includes an 8 in both English Literature and Language.
2. I have A-Levels in English Literature (A*), History (A*) and Fine Art (A*), and an Extended Project Qualification (A*).
3. I have a Bachelor's degree (2:1) from the University of Cambridge in English Literature.
4. I have a Master's degree (Merit) from the University of Oxford in Victorian Literature.
5. I am currently undertaking my Doctorate degree at the University of St Andrews in English Literature.
