About Pedro

What distinguishes my practice is the breadth of my experience and my formal credentials. As a state-certified single-subject teacher, I possess a deep understanding of the pedagogical standards required for student success.

Furthermore, my expertise is not limited to the traditional canon. While I am well-versed in Shakespeare and Classic American Authors, I also integrate Science Fiction and other modern genres into my curriculum. This diverse background—combined with years of experience teaching at both the middle school and collegiate levels—allows me to adapt my instruction to any developmental stage.

About the lesson

As a state-certified educator with experience spanning middle school to the collegiate level, my approach combines academic rigor with the accessibility needed to keep students engaged. Here is a breakdown of how I structure my sessions and what you can expect from my tutoring.

Every session is structured to maximize time and ensure measurable progress. A standard 60-minute lesson follows this flow: Warm-Up (5-10 mins): A quick "low-stakes" writing prompt or vocabulary challenge to activate prior knowledge. Some conceptual introductions (10 mins) which is direct instruction on a specific skill (e.g., identifying subtext, mastering the semicolon, or structuring a thesis).

Close-Reading (15 mins): We dive into a specific excerpt together, annotating for rhetorical devices and tone. Discussion & Analysis (15 mins): An open dialogue where we connect the text to broader themes or contemporary issues. Exit Ticket (5-10 mins): A brief summary or a single paragraph of writing to demonstrate mastery of the day's concept.

What distinguishes my tutoring is the marriage of professional certification and diverse genre expertise. As a state-certified single-subject teacher, I understand the specific standards and rubrics that graders look for. While I am well-versed in the "Classics" and Shakespeare, I also specialize in American Literature and Science Fiction. This allows me to use high-interest genres to teach complex literary theories.
