About Maitrayee
Current role:
Data Scientist
Education:
MSc Physics, King’s College London - Graduated with Distinction in 2020
Experience:
Particle physics researcher (5 years):
As a part of some very fun teams, I wrote machine learning algorithms to pin down elusive particles called neutrinos, gave talks at conferences and spent time in some rather odd places, like an underground observatory in a mine in Japan. My background has instilled in me the belief that the point of education is to enjoy the process of learning - and that it's possible for everyone, if given the right environment, to do so.
Teaching (4 years):
I have taught students at GCSE levels to those in university, in various capacities as a Graduate-level Teaching Assistant, and private tutor in maths, physics, and computing.
Mental-health advocate and volunteer (8 years):
I have supported various charities working towards mental health advocacy and young people's safety, in roles going from facilitating workshops for art-based therapy to providing admin support.
Availability and delivery format of tutorials:
In-person in London or online via Zoom, Skype, or Teams
Schedule:
Seven days a week, mornings to evenings
Style:
Supportive, approachable, and focused on both short-term and long-term success, be it in improving grades, reducing exam stress, building the foundations for top university applications, or just slowing down the pace of formal classroom lessons.

I believe that being acutely attuned to young people brings out the best in them. When it comes to lessons, I'm happy to find out what works for you. This can be weekly 1-2 hour sessions, shorter check-ins spread out throughout the week, and other flexible schedules as per your need.
I bring the best of my experiences to my lessons. My day job is in data science now, before this I was a particle physics researcher for 5 years. In both my jobs, my work essentially is to turn complex problems into simple, step-by-step explanations that eventually build real understanding. Shaping my communication to reach the intended audience is one of the most important aspects of my job. I have also volunteered in spaces supporting young people's safety, mental health advocacy and art-based therapy. These have deepened my sense of wonder for the resilience and the variety of strengths that each of us have in us. Unfortunately, in formal educational environments, it is often the case that an individual's unique strengths are not seen and so, they may find themselves having a tough time. My aim in my lessons is to remedy this and facilitate in bringing your unique strengths to light in the subject that you'd like help with.
I specialise in teaching maths and physics, and computing required for scientific research, at various levels - GCSE, A level and university, having taught formally (as a Teaching Assistant for graduate courses) and informally (as a private tutor) at these levels.

Maitrayee tutored me in calculus, linear algebra and later on, provided me with extensive feedback on how to do research for my Masters. She was extremely attentive to my needs and guided me towards attaining my goals. Her examples are very memorable, and I see maths completely differently now, and don't feel anymore that maths can be daunting.
