About Mariam

My name is Mariam Al-Hassan. I am a Masters student at the University of Leeds studying Architectural Engineering. I have a vast range of interests, from art and music (i hosted my own music radio show for a year and did art A-level) to sociology and history (my undergraduate thesis was based on park design and its impact on the urban fabric). My experience in teaching ranges many ages. I have a younger sister who i have tutored in maths and science since she was in primary school, as well as many university friends who seeked my help when stuggling with maths modules. I have been a mentor to sixth-form age girls trying to break into STEM degrees and am a big advocate for making STEM more approachable for all abilities. I volunteer at an organic vegetable farm in the summer and contribute to my community in Leeds by organising fundraisers and supporting local music. I think of myself as a very enthusiastic and positive person who is still very grounded in reality.

About the lesson

I am a firm believer in approaching teaching with encouragement and dismantling the fear that comes with tackling difficult subjects. I teach people how to think holistically to develop understanding rather than just regurgitating previous examples. In doing so, the student is able to have a more dynamic way of thinking about the subject and the process becomes more creative and thus more fun! I believe information is better retained if it is of interest and has a purpose in the real world, and i believe that educating people on the context of their work and why it matters beyond what they are doing can install a natural passion for it.
