About MAIA

I am a PhD student in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCLA, with a B.S. in Molecular Environmental Biology from UC Berkeley. My academic training is grounded in both biological sciences and quantitative reasoning, and my research interests focus on how organisms and communities respond to environmental change.

Alongside my research, I have extensive teaching experience as a UCLA Teaching Assistant and former peer tutor at UC Berkeley. These roles have strengthened my ability to explain complex concepts clearly, adapt to different learning styles, and support students in developing both confidence and independence in STEM subjects.

I approach tutoring with patience, structure, and flexibility. I prioritize understanding over memorization, and I work with students to break down challenging material into clear, manageable steps. My goal is to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and actively engaging with the material.

I work with high school and college students in mathematics and science, including biology, ecology, genetics, and other related STEM fields, from introductory through upper-division levels. I also support students in exam preparation and in strengthening problem-solving skills for coursework.

My aim is to not only help students succeed in their classes, but to build lasting skills in scientific thinking and quantitative reasoning that they can carry forward in their academic journey.

My teaching approach focuses on building deep understanding rather than memorization. I use step-by-step explanations, guided problem-solving, and active questioning to help students develop confidence and independence. I emphasize breaking complex concepts into manageable pieces and connecting abstract ideas to intuitive or real-world examples.

A typical lesson begins with identifying the student’s goals or problem areas, followed by reviewing key concepts briefly before moving into targeted practice. We work through problems together, with increasing independence as understanding builds. I also incorporate quick checks for understanding and adjust pacing in real time based on the student’s needs. Sessions often end with a short recap and strategies for continued practice.

What sets me apart is my combination of research-level scientific training and extensive teaching experience as both a UCLA Teaching Assistant and former Berkeley peer tutor. This allows me to explain material in multiple ways, adapt quickly to different learning styles, and support both conceptual understanding and technical problem-solving.

My lessons are designed for high school and college students, particularly those in introductory to upper-division courses in math, biology, ecology, genetics, and related STEM fields. I also support students preparing for exams or struggling to connect lecture material to problem sets.
