About Aaliyah
I am a philosopher, writer, and multidisciplinary artist.
I was a competitive student in high school, performing piano competitively and achieving the rank of Valediction. I went on to Columbia University, but I quickly burnt out and had to juggle mental health in addition to my studies. As a result of this, I am mindful of students' holistic well-being in my relation to them as a tutor or teacher.
I love to learn. At Columbia, I took pre-med courses, courses in CS, film, and majored in philosophy and psychology. I learned something from every course and can draw from these materials to this day. I think this is one hallmark of a good education: being able to meaningfully pull from it years or decades later.
I am now pursuing a PhD in philosophy while exploring my artistic interests both outside of the academy and inside of it through a program at Harvard called the Critical Media Practice. I love poetry, and I feel most myself when I am behind a camera.
For fun, I like to spend time in bodies of water and do stand-up!

I am intentional with my approach to thinking: I think about why lessons can go wrong and why they can go right. As a result of this, I cater to the environment that my lessons are in to ensure that stressors and unnecessary distractions do not hinder the learning process.
Besides this, my lessons are tailored to the student. If the student learns at a higher level, we might start by reviewing the concept or theory behind what we are learning before getting into the concrete problems (for example, in math). No matter what, repetition is key, as I believe that this fosters comfort and familiarity with any subject material. Finally, I challenge my students to think critically and often help them to develop their approach to questioning work in general.
