About Ronnie

I have worked as a tutor since I was in undergrad and always enjoy helping students learn skills they’ll use throughout their careers. I also like to bring my students an understanding of how the work they’re doing in class can translate to the work they’ll do in their future jobs. Understanding accounting and finance is incredibly important for any future businessperson and I hope to help you as you reach for your goals.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I got into accounting in high school when I started working as a bookkeeper for extra money over the summer. When I got to college, I did well in my accounting classes and decided to make that my major. As I got farther into the major, I saw other business students struggling and decided to start tutoring introduction to financial and managerial accounting. I also added a second major in finance and started tutoring various finance classes and macroeconomics. I've been tutoring ever since because I love getting to work one-on-one with students, helping them understand these core courses.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor finance and accounting primarily and also tutor in macroeconomics from time to time. I've done almost every type of financial or managerial accounting course out there and a lot of finance courses as well. Finance and economics are also just areas of interest for me so I really enjoy getting to dive into those subjects more with students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Growing up my mom was actually a teacher and I spent a lot of my time around schools and other teachers. I also learned a ton from some really great teachers over the years. We all have classes or topics that give us a hard time and a great teacher can really make a huge impact. I struggled in a calculus class my first year of college and had a great tutor who was able to help me get through the class with a much better grade than I ever could have gotten on my own. I hope I can have that kind of impact on my students.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

For me I think a tutor has to be a great listener and have the ability to break down complex problems into easier to swallow pieces. You want to know where the student is so we don't skip important issues but we also don't want to start with the basics and waste time. I also find a lot of struggles come from a student not knowing the right process. So, a tutor needs to be able to take a tough problem and break it down into some standard, simple steps that a student can learn through practice.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I always tell my accounting and finance students that word problems feel daunting because of the sheer amount of information they throw at you. So instead of reading the entire problem before getting to the actual question, I recommend you read the actual question and then go back and read the information provided, that way you know what actually matters and can cut through the noise.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I've always enjoyed accounting but I've never loved working on taxes. It's never been a subject that I was particularly interested in and I always had to put in more effort than other accounting classes. I understand it and have done quite a few classes on it as part of my academic and professional training but I've never enjoyed it.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love working with startups. I work as a lead analyst and coach for an incubator where I get to work with founders every day. I love getting to share my knowledge and experience in finance and business with them as they build their life's work. It's very similar to teaching in a lot of ways.
  • What makes you a Superprof ?

I think there's three primary value propositions I bring to the table. First, I've studied and worked in both accounting and finance which gives a 360 degree view of both subjects and allows me to get really into the details if a student needs it. Second, I've done so much training and tutoring in these subject areas that I've found the best ways to explain what works and why in easily digestible ways. And finally, I really enjoy what I do and love getting to work with students which I hope shows through our lessons and makes the student comfortable in the learning environment.
