About Ava

My name is Ava Lewis, and I'm an undergraduate student in my second year at the University of Lancaster, studying English Literature and Creative Writing with a minor in History. Despite being from Wales originally, I have an international student background - having been educated in Germany, Malaysia, and Singapore - which I believe gave me a great global perspective and adaptable nature. My greatest passion is English Literature, as I've always been an avid reader; I read everything from essay collections to sci-fi to experimental horror, and I'm dedicated to inspiring love for reading and language in other people. That's why I love tutoring and why I intend to pursue teaching later in my life. I'm a hard worker and I expect my students to bring as much dedication to lessons as I do, but I also understand that learning is a labour of love and therefore my lessons should be fun as much as they are helpful.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching is highly adaptable to the specific needs and goals of the learner. My goal in tutoring is not only to help my students maximise their potential and understanding, but also to encourage love for the subject with plenty of super-curricular knowledge included alongside basic material that aligns with school courses. My typical lessons last 30-60 minutes, but I've also structured 90-120 minute sessions when covering a broad range of material - this is very much up to what works for the student and the content. I have a lot of experience of tutoring in a school environment across a broad range - anything from GCSE Latin students to Nursery students learning to read. I've also privately tutored students between 6-13 over my gap year. My age range for students is 6-16. I am familiar with the GCSE curriculum and the International Baccalaureate curriculum, as well as primary school knowledge targets, and I'm highly adaptable to different courses and goals - my last tutoring position was in Canada where I adapted to the North American school system.

This first lesson offered with Ava will allow you to get to know each other and clearly specify your needs for your next lessons.

Details

I don't charge additionally for the time I take to prepare lessons unless that time exceeds roughly an hour and a half - at that point, the time will be tacked on to the student's paid lesson time. Additionally, if they require any materials outside of the ones I have free access to, I can't cover those myself so there will either have to be an alternative material or reimbursement from the student. If I have to travel to meet with a student, I expect my travel fees to be covered.
