About Downey

I am a credentialed math teacher with classroom experience teaching a range of high school math courses. My background in education allows me to understand both the academic expectations students face and the challenges that can make math feel overwhelming. I approach tutoring with patience, structure, and encouragement, focusing on helping students build confidence alongside strong problem-solving skills. As both an educator and a coach, I value consistency, effort, and growth. My goal is to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and are empowered to succeed independently.

About the lesson

My lessons focus on helping students truly understand math rather than memorizing steps. I begin each session by identifying gaps in understanding, then break concepts down into clear, manageable pieces using real examples and guided practice. A typical lesson includes reviewing key ideas, working through problems together, and building strategies students can use independently. I emphasize organization, problem-solving habits, and confidence so students feel prepared in class and on assessments. Lessons are designed for middle school and high school students, including Algebra, Geometry, and higher-level math. My classroom experience allows me to adapt instruction to each student’s learning style and academic goals.
