About Amit
Hi! My name is Amit. I am a Materials Engineer by training that then went into finance (Citibank) and business (McKinsey, Wayfair, etc.) as a career.
Those things all involve a lot of math! The great part about math is that it really works, and is all around us. The challenge is that the way it is taught these days often puts an emphasis on speed, efficiency, and quickly getting to the "right" answer. Or worse, place emphasis on only one method to solve a question or visualize the situation.
That can make math incredibly frustrating or confusing! But it doesn't have to be this way. The key ingredient is personalized, one-on-one time where you can express what is and isn't making sense, with someone who is both a good listener and creative with their explanations.
I left my corporate job to personally supplement my own daughter's school learning, and have seen how it has established solid foundations for her and encouraged her love of math. I am eager to do the same for you!

I take time to ask a lot of questions and listen to what the student is understanding. How they got to an answer, or why they feel stuck.
I am most focused on finding out what needs to shift for the understanding to really click. Some examples:
When talking about commutative properties, a first grader was struggling to understand why it does not apply for subtraction but does for addition, especially since addition and subtraction are at the same level in the Order of Operations.
We worked through it by helping the child understand that all numbers, including the first number, carry a sign. We developed a custom method where the child would write-in" 0 + " at the beginning of each question to help them remember that switching the order of addition and subtraction is fine, so long as the actual instruction itself, to take away or remove, is not altered.
I also develop creative visuals in cases where the student is more adept at picking up a concept visually. It's much easier to understand that you "need to do the same thing to both sides of the equation" when the student can visualize the equation as a set of weighing scales. This gives them the permission *not* to do the same thing to both sides, so long as they change the equal sign to a greater than or less than sign, just like the scale would say. This then breaks things down into steps and helps the principle actually *stick* rather than just being a memorized rule.
Above all, it is offering the lesson in a patient and encouraging way that helps the child know that they are not being forced to memorize something but see math everywhere in the world that gives me the most joy.
