About Jenna
I am a guitar tutor with 7 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music in Guitar with a specialism in music theory for guitarists. I have worked with over 260 students and I have a particular reputation among intermediate and advanced students for the clarity and depth of my harmonic instruction. My theory specialism means I approach harmony from the inside of the guitar rather than applying external theoretical knowledge to the instrument, and the guitar-specific harmonic insights this produces are things I share with students as accumulated practical wisdom rather than academic instruction. I also run a guitar harmony workshop series for advanced players that has attracted participants from professional backgrounds.

My guitar teaching focuses on harmonic understanding — specifically the ability to construct, voice, and use any chord type anywhere on the fretboard — as the primary vehicle for making guitarists genuinely musically literate rather than pattern-dependent. I begin with interval training on the guitar because the ability to find and hear any interval from any starting note is the foundation of all chord construction and the prerequisite for all fretboard harmony understanding. My chord construction curriculum teaches students to build any chord from its formula — major triad, minor seventh, dominant ninth, half-diminished — on any root note on any string set, so that the student's chord vocabulary is open-ended rather than limited to memorized shapes. Chord inversions are addressed systematically as a compositional and harmonic resource because inversions change the color and function of a chord in ways that guitarists who know only root position chords can never access. Voicing — the specific choice of which notes to include and in which register when constructing a chord on guitar — is taught as a compositional and harmonic skill because different voicings of the same chord can suggest completely different sonic worlds. Extended chords — ninths, elevenths, thirteenths — are introduced at intermediate level as the harmonic language of jazz, fusion, and contemporary music, and students learn to construct them on the guitar by understanding which extensions are most characteristic of each chord type. Lead sheet reading — translating chord symbols into voiced guitar chords — is developed as the practical application of all chord knowledge. My teaching goal is a guitarist who can read any chord symbol and immediately produce three different voicings for it anywhere on the fretboard.
