About Elijah
Hello friends, my name is Elijah Willie, and I am currently a PhD candidate in Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney, where I'm developing interpretable computational methods for characterizing disease-associated cellular phenotypes through single-cell and spatial omics data analysis. My research has resulted in novel frameworks including FuseSOM for multiview clustering in imaging cytometry and dioscRi for clinical prediction using deep learning approaches.
I studied computer science, molecular biology, and biochemistry with a minor in statistics at Simon Fraser University, then completed my master's in bioinformatics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). During my masters, I was a teaching assistant for the Masters of Data Science program and continued afterward to develop courses in programming, data visualization, and machine learning.
Before starting my PhD, I worked as a Senior Bioinformatician at Roche building high-performance proteomics pipelines, and prior to that at Fusion Genomics developing ML-based tools for next-generation sequencing analysis. I've also contributed to research at BC Cancer engineering clinical pipelines for AML genomic profiling.
Currently, I'm teaching Data Analytics Foundations (ODAT5011), Data Science Capstone (DATA3888), and Computational Statistical Methods (STAT5003) at the University of Sydney. My work has been published in journals including Nature Communications, Nature Immunology, Blood, and JCO, focusing on areas from single-cell integration to tumor microenvironment characterization.
Besides bioinformatics and data science, I also have interests in extracurriculars such as soccer, gaming, chess, and traveling.

My six years of experience in teaching and course development have reinforced my belief that students learn best by building on simple, familiar concepts. From developing courses for UBC's Masters of Data Science program to currently teaching Data Analytics Foundations, Data Science Capstone, and Computational Statistical Methods at the University of Sydney, I've consistently found that using real-world examples helps bridge the gap between abstract statistical concepts and practical applications.
In my courses, I leverage datasets from diverse domains—whether it's analyzing spatial transcriptomics data in my research or using everyday scenarios in ODAT5011—to help students develop critical thinking skills. My experience across different educational contexts, from creating Python-based ML courses at UBC to teaching R-based analytics at Sydney, has taught me the importance of adapting pedagogical approaches to meet diverse student needs.
I believe effective education requires continuous learning and flexibility. As someone who works at the intersection of computational biology, statistics, and data science, I understand that both the tools and the learners are constantly evolving. While technologies and student demographics change, I've found that distilling complex ideas through tangible examples remains a fundamental strategy. Whether I'm explaining variance decomposition in spatial omics to research students or introducing basic statistical concepts to beginners, this approach consistently facilitates deeper understanding.
My commitment is to remain responsive to new teaching methodologies while maintaining the core principle of making complex concepts accessible through practical, real-world applications. This philosophy has guided my teaching from my early days as a TA through to my current role preparing the next generation of data scientists and statisticians.

Perfect! Great communicator. Breaks down examples very well and makes information very digestable.
Perfect! Elijah was very helpful and patient with my son. Highly recommended.
Perfect! Elijah has been tutoring my daughter for the past few months. He helps with math, physics and chemistry.
He has been very helpful, flexible and always comes prepared to the tutoring sessions. He makes sure that she thoroughly understands the concepts instead of rushing through to the lesson. My daughter’s confidence and grades have significantly improved.
Thank you Elijah for your support and help!- An exciting student that is eager to learn. Came prepared with lots of questions which made the session go even smoother. It was a pleasure tutoring Lavinia.Elijah's response :
Perfect! Elijah is very knowledgable on the subject of statistics and saved me a lot of time and frustration with his advice. He is a very caring person and super easy to talk to, even if your knowledge on the subject isn't that great starting off.
- Dan was nice and knows how to ask the right kinds of questions. Made his doubts clear which help spurred a fruitful session.Elijah's response :

Elijah TA'd a couple of my courses during my masters of Data Science.
Definitely knows his stuff, great at explaining complicated concepts, very approachable and does a great job at understanding where the student is coming from and their perspective.
Highly recommendedLearning challenging topics in mathematics would be best paired with Elijah's expertise and great attitude! Elijah is
an awesome team player, incredibly knowledgeable and would make a patient and dedicated tutor.I met Elijah during our Master's in Bioinformatics at UBC. Elijah was patient, brilliant and funny when explaining statistics and programming concepts to me during our first term. I honestly give Elijah my highest recommendation, and I will stress how rare it is to have the combination of being such an upbeat and knowledgeable teacher.
Elijah is a great tutor and breaks down complicated concepts in math, stats, chemistry, biology (especially genetics and biochem) so that I perform much better on my assessments and have greater confidence in the material. He’s patient, kind and has a great sense of humour that makes our sessions enjoyable, even over Zoom. Fully recommend him to anyone else!
Elijah is an awesome tutor! He’s made stats so much easier for me. He’s patient and kind, and keeps going at a topic until I understand it.
