About Justin
I have a doctorate in Music Theory & Composition with a concentration in Composition from Florida State University, where I taught music theory and aural skills courses as instructor of record for three years. As part of my degrees, I studied music theory pedagogy with Nancy Rogers and Jane Piper Clendinning at Florida State University and with Rebecca Jemian at the University of Louisville. I have also taught Composition and Beginning French at FSU, and served as a peer tutor in Music Theory at Ohio Wesleyan University.

As an educator and particularly as a tutor, I make frequent use of the Socratic method and model process for my students. With my line of questioning, I encourage students to think independently while also reinforcing thought processes that help students to complete tasks and assess problems on their own. Rather than giving students all the answers, I ask questions to reveal what they know already and then build upon that knowledge with leading questions. By arriving at concepts independently, the conclusions become more personally relevant and easier to remember. I also frequently push students to make connections between courses that inform each other, such as written theory and aural skills. I model process in order to demystify the act of effective and efficient practice. This guidance also helps to help relieve anxiety around demanding activities, such as dictation or writing counterpoint. In addition to focusing content mastery as it applies to the classical music canon, I also include musical examples from non-classical genres from popular music to musical theatre. I have recently used relevant examples from "Phineas and Ferb," and "The Phantom of the Opera," as well as by Adele in my teaching.
