About Johanna
Hey there! I'm a recent grad of Columbia University, and I absolutely love to teach. I have 7 years of experience as a piano teacher and 1 year of experience as a web development instructor, but besides these two teaching paths, I've also been an on/off tutor since high school. I specialized computer science and sustainable development for my undergrad, and totally geek out on finding intersections between the two. I'm aiming to fill my evenings and weekends tutoring students on a variety of subjects - my favorites are computer science, math, and music, but am open to other subjects as well. As a self-identified overachiever and over-planner, I want to help other students achieve all of their academic pursuits as best as possible. I've worked with students ages 5-40 in the past, and find it super fun adapting to different ages and learning styles.

I have played classical piano for the past 18 years - starting at age 4, my life has consistently included at least an hour of daily piano practice. I understand the importance and the beauty of having a musical presence in a child's and adult's life alike, and have enjoyed supporting this gift as a piano teacher for the past seven years. I typically structure my lessons with 15 minutes of scales and technique, then the remaining time going through 1-3 pieces of music. I give 30-60 minute lessons, depending on a student's age and level. I believe in fostering a supportive and confidence-boosting learning environment, and in celebrating my students' musical creativity during lessons while learning safe and sturdy technique.
