About Kori

Hello, my name's Kori Caignou. I grew up in Vernon before I moved to Kelowna, British Columbia in 2016. I had previously considered being an interpreter, as I have always had a flair for languages. I speak 3 languages and study them as a hobby. I enjoy it, and my American Sign Language is largely self-taught.

In July 2012, I volunteered with a local team to go to Châteauguay, Québec and run a soccer camp. While there I helped set-up and assisted in training the new coaches, to give them the tools to run the camp, on their own, in the future. When not running the camp we would chat, and connect with the youth, and other people running the camp.

In February 2013, I was accepted into the OSEF (Organisme de Séjours Educatifs Francophones) Program. That August, I hosted an exchange student for 2 months. While she was here I not only saw how she adapted, and made a great friend but realized that travelling and experiencing other cultures was something I was deeply passionate about.

That upcoming January I left for my exchange, and lived with the aforementioned exchange student. Here I was an exchange student at Institut de l'Assomption in Brussels, Belgium. I lived, studied and interacted with the locals as well as other internationals on a daily basis for 3 months. It was a phenomenal experience for me, and I made a lot of new friends from all over the world.

In June of 2014, I had not only returned from Belgium, but made the Honour Roll, and graduated from high school. I also found a job as a cashier and worked in that profession for quite a while. At that time I had also been a youth leader at a local church. I helped run activities and hung out with local youth. I had been a part of this program myself since I was in grade 8. Then in early March of 2016, I moved out to Kelowna in search of some new opportunities for work and volunteering.

Finally, I completed my TESL Certificate course in May of 2016 through Okanagan College and started tutoring French immersion students. I hope to find new and exciting opportunities overseas or at home in Canada. I would love to go to South America or Asia in the future and would return to Europe in a heartbeat.

I firmly believe that we never stop learning, no matter what. I believe that this should affect us as teachers, as we must always strive to improve, and update our knowledge of not only teaching methods but the actual language itself.

Not only is this something that I am particularly passionate about, but I find that this is a particularly important mindset to bring into a language classroom as languages are ever-evolving. Now, keeping this in mind, there are a number of practices that I feel should always be brought into the language classroom, and are vital to consider.

As a teacher, it is important to consider not only the course's objectives but also the students and what they want to gain from the course. This not only varies from course to course but from student to student as well.

An academic English class would be taught very differently from say, a business's English class, or a vocational course. In other words, someone who wants to learn English to go on a holiday does not need to learn academic English and will most likely not have the motivation, feeling that it is a waste of their time.

On the flip side, teaching vocational English to someone in an academic or exam-prep course will not go well. These students need a higher level of English and conversely will also feel that the course is a waste of their time.

All in all, I feel that it is important to create a lively learning atmosphere, motivate the students, use positive reinforcement, use a variety of assessment methods, consider cultural differences in students, and above all consider the students' learning objectives.
