About Maline
My teaching experiences began as a missionary in the Dominican Republic. I worked with children starting at the kindergarten level all the way up to working with adults who were struggling to learn how to read and write. I then proceeded to teach at two international schools, opened my own tutoring center, and currently do in-person and online tutoring to children and adults.

Program Break Down:
Initial testing
Usually takes about 3 hrs depending on the grade level and number of subjects being tested. The testing itself is free but the testing session will be a regular fee unless you would like to create a separate account and test your daughter or son on your own.
It is important that if this is the route you would like to take, the child has zero assistance during testing and that you sit beside them to make sure they do not use any outside resources.
The program I use to fill in gaps is called School Of Tomorrow. School Of Tomorrow creates their own curriculum called Paces. After being evaluated using the diagnostic test, the test itself will make suggestions based on your child's performance on each test. Every child tests 3 years below their last completed grade level. For example: Jerome is in grade 12 and struggling in English class. He will begin his diagnostic test at grade 9 and proceed from there.
As the program assesses their performance, I will make the appropriate purchases. The diagnostic test evaluates students in 4 main subject areas but I only test students in the areas that the parents have asked me to. The subjects are Math, Reading, English, Word Building. Writing is assessed individually and is usually combined with their Word Building skill level.
After the diagnostic:
The first thing that is suggested are Gap Paces. The Gap Paces are used to fill in any gap(s) that was/were found during testing. Your child may have 1 gap or 10 gaps. It really depends on the subject in which they are being tested . Often times the reason students struggle in school has to do with their learning gaps. The diagnostic tests were created to find those gaps and help students work through them.
Once they have completed the test, gap suggestions will be available. When a student has fulfilled the gap requirements, they are usually allowed to proceed to the next Pace set. The next Pace Set is not based on their actual grade, but the next grade suggested after closing the academy gaps. (Ex: Jen had 4 gaps at the 6th grade level. She completed the pace gaps and can now proceed to the 7th grade Pace level even though Jen is in the 10th grade. )
Each Pace has 34-45 pages. After every few pages you will see a Check-Up. (Students can usually go back and review their work for clarity.) At the end of each Pace, students will be asked to take a Self-Test. It is suggested that students treat the Self-test like an actual test (they should not go back and review but may if they feel it is absolutely necessary). Once a student has completed the Self-Test, a teacher/tutor can determine whether they are ready for the official test. Each Pace includes a Test which covers the content goals for the Pace itself. Passing the big test is a clear indication that the student is ready for the next Pace. A Pacing score is a 75% but we all shoot for at least an 80% to move forward.
Paces as Content
The Paces are not only used as gap fillers. They are also content studied across the United States. Each subject comes with a set of 12 Paces. The 12 Paces are equivalent to 1 year's worth of material for each student. In a homeschool setting, students will have 5 sets of 12 which is enough to complete their grade level expectations. Please be aware that this program uses Christian principles and pulls from Biblical values. I, as a tutor, do not use this program to promote any form of religion or belief system. The academic curriculum is what I focus on.
Cost of Paces
Each Pace costs around 3.00
Each Pace Teacher Key costs around 3.00
Shipping+Tax is anywhere from 20-45 dollars combined.
*I try to make several orders at one time in order to divide up the shipping for different parents.
My Tutoring Program
At the beginning:
Every tutoring session begins with 5 minutes of nonstop, unedited writing/typing. The goal is to get students’ ideas flowing and it also helps break the ice. Students may come up with their own prompt, or I may give them a prompt. We may also play a game and write about it afterwards. If the kids are younger than 3rd grade, uninterrupted writing time is about 3 minutes. I really try to push everyone to do no more than 5 minutes and no less than 3 minutes. They will also do 3 minutes of typing. Their writing prompts and time is solely based on how many words they are able to type per minute. In order to know this, students are given 3 minutes to typing each day. They then multiply their words per minute by 5. This determines how many words they should have in their first writing assignment.
In the Middle:
I use the Paces to work on their learning gaps. Each student has different needs in regards to how I use the Paces. Some students only need to take the test that comes with the actual Pace, and other students need to do every page within the Pace to understand the subject matter better. The way I use the Paces during tutoring is dependent on my observation of each student. We try and do 3 pages/per subject each visit. (Once a student has completed their learning gaps, I speak with each parent to see if they want to continue with the program and purchase paces that correspond to their next level of understanding)
During this time, I also ask if there is any homework they would like me to look at. Parents are asked to let me know ahead of time if there is homework each student needs helps with so that I can rearrange my schedule to fit the needs of the student.
If they do not have any homework to work on, I access my other resources which are online. I use several free academic programs such as free reading program.com. Some students may also do book studies and other activities that will promote learning. There is ALWAYS work to do.
At the End:
Most of my tutoring sessions will usually end with a fun game, online typing exercise, or depending on the speed of each student, finishing up Paces or homework that was assigned by their school.
Depending on each student and my plans for that session, the tutoring may end later. Any significant extra time (10+minutes) will be billed on the following month's invoice.
Homework:
Depending on the progress of each student, I will assign homework from the Pace book as practice. I will not assign busy work as my goal is to move them forward to the next Pace as long as they have harnessed the knowledge needed to move on.
However, students will remain with their Paces so you are free to have them work in the Paces throughout the week. Just as long as they are completing the required work I give them, I am ok with you giving them more work. It is important to find a healthy balance between their everyday school requirements and what I ask them to do during tutoring and between tutoring sessions.
***Students who are behind and struggling will have fewer homework requirements. Students who are ahead and advancing (as in, tested higher than their actual grade level) will have more homework expectations.
Records:
I keep a record of everything we do during tutoring. We also do a lot of typing where each student shares documents with me and I am able to keep a copy of what they do. I am hoping to publish a type of short story for some of the students who are interested. I use lulu.com for publishing. I use chalk.com to record each tutoring session. If ever you would like a copy of all the tutoring sessions and what was done, please do not hesitate to ask. If you would like to see how your children are doing during tutoring, feel free to ask. I use Igradeplus as a resource to input Pace Test scores, participation and more.
Materials for Tutoring
Each student tutoring with me will need to have the following items:
1. Writing Utensils and erasers (in working condition)
2. Mini whiteboard
3. Folder to put in items (plastic folder is recommended)
4. Whiteboard markers
5. Calculator (for those who are working on improving math 7th grade and under)
6. Paces (ordered by tutor)
7. A device with a keyboard
8. Internet access
9. A notebook for their 5 minute writing sessions
*10. A printer to print off typed assignments for the purpose of editing
*Any student who does not have a device with a keyboard can rent one from me for 15 dollars per week until they are able to get one.
*For any student who does not have internet access will be using my phone data and will be billed 5 dollars for each day the internet data is used.
Tutoring Schedules
Each student will have a set schedule each week/month. There is a little bit of flexibility but any changes need 12 hrs advance notice. There are times I need to change things up and I will always ask you if the change for that day/week works. Substitutions can only be made if there is 24 hours advance notice including any changes from my end.
1. Usually 1-1.5 hrs per student. (I usually do not go above that time as every child's attention span varies but studies have shown students between 1st and 8th grade max out at around 1 hour and 15 minutes.)
2. It is essential that we begin and end on time in order to maximize potential. I teach within the time brackets agreed upon and any significant extra time will be billed for the following month. (Please use an alarm or calendar that reminds you of the tutoring times). I will wait no more than 10 minutes before leaving or signing off (if the session is online).
3. Each student will meet at least once a week in person and once a week online.
4. If tutoring is only once a week in total, then in person and online will alternate.
Holidays/Summer Time
Schedules are more flexible during this time and it is very important for parents to contact me if students have a half day or no school the next day. This way I am able to make tutoring earlier or later depending on your child's availability.
Environment
Where a student receives tutoring is very important to their learning. It is essential that students be in a quiet area every time we have tutoring. There really is no exceptions to this.
Online
Online tutoring happens once a week. Students will stay with their materials so that it makes online tutoring productive. When students are engaged in online tutoring, it is important to make sure the room they are in is well lit, and all the materials they may need are in front of them. If a student is in their room, they should have their door open during the entire tutoring time. Strong internet access is a must.
I usually use google chat to go live and I am able to share my screen and work with each student this way. Other platforms may be introduced in the near future. I also have an online whiteboard where each child is asked to type and respond to questions. Online tutoring is extremely effective and a great way to learn and be academically productive.
In person
Once a week (or alternating), I will drive to your home or agreed location and work with your daughter or son. It would be best if we can work in a quiet room or sectioned off area where students are not being interrupted or distracted. If I feel that there are too many distractions, a new location will be suggested or full time online tutoring will be the new recommendation.
Tardies
Every student is expected to be on-time to in person and online tutoring. If a student needs to be late, it is important that they contact the tutor at their earliest convenience (within an hour). Any student 10 minutes late or over will forfeit their spot for tutoring that day. Substitutions will not be available for late students.
Pace+Payment
Depending on where your child stands academically, your invoice may include any new Paces necessary to proceed. I will always let you know ahead of time if this will be the case. You are also free to purchase your own Paces here. You are welcome to request all the Paces you have purchased to keep with you. I currently keep them all as they follow a certain number sequence. Once the Paces are in your hands, it is important that the kids have access to them for each tutoring session.
