About Thomas
With no prior experience even in modern languages, I began self-teaching Latin when I was fifteen thanks to a passion for ancient poetry, and took up Greek shortly afterwards. (My state school provided neither of these.) Soon after my admission to Downing College, Cambridge, I took up prose and verse composition in Latin and Ancient Greek at the earliest opportunity, being taught by the late distinguished Hellenist of Trinity College, Dr Neil Hopkinson. In whatever free time I had, I composed Latin and Greek poetry and rhetorical exercises, and competed for the William Browne Medal, which I won two years consecutively. Since university, I have built up a large body of Latin work (odes, epigrams, progymnasmata, elegies, and more), and tutored for three years continuously.

As a former autodidact that learnt Latin and Greek from scratch with no prior experience in languages, and then subsequently went on to study at Cambridge and win the William Browne Medal (2021, 2022), the Corbett Prize for Greek (2021), the Platt Prize (2019), and the John Stuart of Rannoch Scholarship (2021), I know what approaches succeed in studying ancient languages. In teaching beginners, in which I have three years of experience, I begin with a comprehensive survey of morphology and syntax to give the student a general feel for the language, and focus heavily on composition so that the student can put these into use immediately. From here we proceed to an intelligently curated selection of authors of increasing difficulty, with interesting discussions on their works' actual contents rather than simply their medium: a true appreciation for ancient literature is the only way of ensuring consistency and progress with the languages in which it is written. At more advanced stages, particularly with Greek, lessons on sound change and word formation, which I believe are immensely useful for seeing the tongue's hidden regularity, can be provided.
