About Abby

Hi there! I’m Abby, a college student majoring in political science with minors in humanities and psychology. Coming from a classical education background, I’ve spent years immersed in reading, writing, and analyzing big ideas—and I absolutely love helping students find their own voice through writing!
I know that staring at a blank page or trying to decipher complex literature can feel overwhelming. That’s why my approach is all about taking the stress out of English class. Whether we’re brainstorming essay topics, breaking down a tricky book, or line-editing a draft until it shines, I aim to make our sessions encouraging, engaging, and genuinely fun.
Think of me as your personal writing coach and proofreading ally. My goal is to build your confidence, share practical tips that actually make sense, and help you ace your classes without the headache. I can’t wait to team up and help you reach your goals!

My Teaching Method & Philosophy

I believe that mastering English, literature, and writing is not about memorizing abstract rules—it is about discovering your voice and gaining the confidence to express your ideas clearly and persuasively. Having been educated in a rigorous classical tradition, I approach language and literature with a strong emphasis on foundational logic, structural clarity, and active engagement with texts.

My teaching style is conversational, patient, and highly structured. Rather than simply correcting a student's mistakes, I guide them to understand why a particular sentence structure works, how an argument flows, or what an author is conveying beneath the surface text. Whether we are analyzing a complex piece of literature or editing a draft line-by-line, I tailor every session to the student’s individual learning style, helping them move from hesitation to total mastery.\

What a Typical Lesson Looks Like

Each 60-minute session is designed to balance active instruction with hands-on practice:
Warm-Up & Goal Setting (5–10 Minutes): We begin by reviewing previous feedback, addressing any pressing homework or assignment deadlines, and setting clear objectives for the day’s session.
Core Skill Development (20 Minutes): We dive into the target concept—whether that involves breaking down a literary essay prompt, learning mechanics for active vs. passive voice, analyzing a novel chapter, or outlining a research paper.
Guided Practice & Collaboration (20 Minutes): We apply the concepts directly. For writing and proofreading, we work collaboratively on real outlines or drafts, line-by-line. For literature, we practice close reading, annotation techniques, and textual analysis.
Review, Actionable Feedback & Next Steps (10 Minutes): We summarize key takeaways, polish current drafts, and outline a concrete checklist or practice task for the student to work on before our next meeting.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor

As a dedicated college student majoring in political science with minors in the humanities and psychology, my entire academic focus centers on research, critical analysis, and persuasive writing. Having gone through a classical education background myself, I bring a unique blend of formal textual discipline and an encouraging, accessible peer-mentor perspective.

Having balance across humanities disciplines allows me to help students bridge the gap between creative thought and precise academic execution. I do not just edit a student's paper—I teach them how to self-edit, spot grammatical inconsistencies, build compelling theses, and construct coherent arguments that stand out in the classroom.

Who These Lessons Are For

My lessons are thoughtfully tailored for students at various academic stages who want to build genuine confidence in their reading and writing abilities:

Middle School & High School Students (Grades 6–12): Building strong foundational grammar, mastering essay structures (persuasive, analytical, narrative, and expository), and improving reading comprehension.

High School Literature & AP/Honors Prep: Deepening textual analysis, understanding historical/literary context, and writing high-level analytical essays.

College Applicants & Draft Revision: Polishing personal statements, high school essays, and college-level term papers with detailed proofreading for clarity, tone, and grammar.

Eager Learners Seeking Skill Building: Any student struggling with writing anxiety, organization, or mechanics who needs a patient, structured guide to make reading and writing enjoyable.
